avici slash boot to desktop

when i am playing on my pc version of grandia 2, and i get to the battle with valmar's heart, and it does the avici slash move. as soon as the tops of the swords sink below ground (i'm assuming that this is where the avi event would occur) the game boots me to desktop with no error.
besides this the game has run great.
i have directx 9.0a and the latest win media player.
i also have the latest drivers for me geforce 4 fx 5200 ultra. this is getting seriously annoying since the dialog before the fight is a good 5 minutes and the heart uses that move every time i have played against it.
anyone know of either a way i can fix this or possibly some sort of hack or cheat to surpass the fight entirely.
thanks all.
Hazz.
