For all of you having a problem with the game in Windows XP, a possible solution is this: (worked for me, with the above moving all the data folders onto the drive) I used VMware to set up a virtual windows 98 machine inside of XP, and the game works perfectly. 2 things,
first off you must know how to use virtual machines(sorry, I wont get into how to do it, Do some bloody research and
second, You can get a copy of VMware for a trial period from their website, besides that, purchase yourself a copy! (one of the most useful programs I have ever used).
If you ahve any other problems with this method, shoot me an email at kahsirisdead@yahoo.com I can help with certain aspects of vmware, but I wont go through all of it. Remember.... DO RESEARCH!

I have something strange to add, but before that, an advice :
Always after making external adjustments start the gmconfig.exe before the game exe, even if you don't actually want to change the buttons or the resolution. The configurer autodetects some settings (for example the gamepad) and it usually helps.
The game works perfectly for me when I remove my usb gamepad (saitek p2600) thus removing the pad's dll from memory, and then running the gmconfig before the game exe. All introes, cutscenes and spellcastings utilizing video as a part of the fx work flawlessly. I noticed this when I read that someone had similar problems earlier. It seemed very strange and I checked it a few times to make sure it was it... there is no doubt in my mind.
When I plug the pad (and run gmconfig) I can play the game up to a point when someone cast's a spell that uses video. Then the game seems to halt and wait for the video to start. The game music goes on and everything (it's not a real freeze because the game engine is clearly still running) but it's basically stuck. Also all of the intro and cutscence videos have to be skipped with the f9.
I have no idea why this happens.. prolly something to do with the way they've implemented the dx component that takes in the pad input. It's very difficult to guess without seeing the code. I don't want to play this without the controller so i'm as stuck as anyone else. I'dont know what happens with ordinary joystick (non-usb)...

oh yeah, one more thing...
"just a note" : emulator? that's ridiculous.
Know the difference between an emulator and a port?
Coding an emulator is actually alot more work than a port. Nobody in their right mind would could code an emulator and implement it in only one game like this.. it wouldn't be cost effective and it would also be slow. The game grandia2 pc isn't slow at all. If it was an emulator it would be a superb DC emulator, wich like we have never seen..
There are also other considerations : the rom of DC (dreamcast) is property of nintendo. You cannot run DC emulation without one.
It's just common sense ppl. Emulator is made when you want to run many or possibly all of the programs coded to the platform in question. When you want to make a port to pc, you make a pc program that uses the content taken from (or based on) the original game. You have to convert the textures(possibly make higher resolution ones) and sounds etc and make a simple d3d engine that can do FX close to DC. It's simple and you don't have to worry about compatibility.

Some solutions. I have windows xp sp2 GeForce 6800
Problem: black screen + game crashes when attack with wings or gravity
it is solved when you can play movies in cat. :grandia\btl with Media Player Classis so if my solution doesn’t work try make it possible of your own here’s what I’ve done:
install this codec: Cinepac(R) if the link below doesn’t work and you cant find it download GOM Player, play a movie form BTL cat. with it and it will tell you what codec do you need and where to find it.
codec: http://rapidshare.de/files/34735652/iccvidSetup.exe.html
GOM player: http://www.gomplayer.com/main.html
Now the funny part if you install the codec alone you will just hear music and still see the black screen to complete it you must run GmConfig always before you start Grandia It worked for me

Well heres the thing : The all videos play fine in any player and also in the game (without the gamepad). *** DON'T GO INSTALLING SOME RANDOM CODECS IF THE VIDEOS ALREADY PLAY MANUALLY. *** I tried a few things but couldn't come up with a solution for the gamepad problem, perhaps it's the saitek's rather invasive virtual keyboard & mouse drivers for the joystick(never had any problems with any other game)... Surely there are some gamepads, and their drivers that won't cause the ingame videos to freeze. Surely they did try it out atleast with one gamepad.

OK I've got a solution.
(As I told before, always run gmconfig and press 'ok' before starting the game.)
This is for those that have problems with videos and spell video fx freezing the game when they have they're pad plugged in. Those who CAN play the videos manually, and have a completely working game with the pad unplugged...
Disable the pad hid from the device manager, start gmconfig (press ok), start the game and load your savegame. Activate the hid (the game wont notice a thing). Program a pad setup that uses the keyboard layout as it's output. Use the arrowkeys for the movement! When I used the num keys, the diagonal directions got stuck. If you have saitek p2600 put the pov to 8 buttons setup and put arrowkey up/down + arrowkey left/right together in the diagonals. Save the setup so u dont have to do it again and load it in to the joystick. alt tab back to the game ... It's a miracle! You can play the game with your pad with the videos working. Now everytime you start : disable the hid, start game, load profile to the pad get to playing. The reason why you have to program a setup that uses the keyboard layout is because in the eyes of the game it's no longer a joystick, it's just incoming keyboard input. It's rather simple, sorry if I confused any of you. Read it again slowly enjoy!

Everything I did to get it semi-working... in 2 post.

Ok I'm new to this forum and found this to be the best help for Grandia 2 pc.
For those who don't want to read my comments and just want faqs, see where I've put an * next to them in the ----- box.
Ok I've tried EVERYTHING posted here so far... and I've gone from crashing before the ubisoft logo to playing for a good 2 hours into the game.
I have a P2.4 with 1gig ram, Geforce 4 440mx and XP SP2 os.
Using the tips here (repeated below) I've managed to get the game working but still cannot get past the Fallen Wings special move problem, the game just freezes there with the black screen around her.
I've tried everything with the codecs but to no avail (I think surely if the movies and background movies for the special moves play in media player then it surely can't be a coded problem). I have got the K-Lite codec pack now installed on my pc, and according to the 'G Spot Codec Info' program which came with it, all the movies and special moves backgrounds have the correct codecs to play on my pc.
There seems no way to get past the caves part where Millenia uses her Fallen Wings special move, and there seems no patch or info from ubisoft themselves on the net...
...BUT for anyone still unclear, here's what I did to get the game working this far...

-------------------
* Install the game as normal. -Insert Grandia CD2 to your CDRom drive -Copy ALL FILES from each of the following directories on CD2 to the hard drive installed directories of the same name:
\uvms \visual \vms
* Cut all the contents of visual and paste to an unused folder eg "Cut-Scenes" folder so that you can view video in media player if required.
* Run the GMconfig Everytime before playing, also I found setting the keys closer worked eg z = accept, x = cancel, c = run/walk, a = rotate cam left, d = rotate cam right, f = change compass setting.
* Note that a and d work fine for camera rotate, but for some reason a and b buttons won't change pages in equip/magic screens, so that's why I used d. d key works, and I just keep pressing d to skip pages right as it loops anyway! Sometimes GMconfig (and indeed the whole game) is very touchy, just try setting the keys again, should work.
* I have had no usb controller errors because have just used keyboard.
* Then use F5 to turn off shadows (much smoother!) and F9 to skip blank cut-scenes in the game (not missing much!).
Now if only someone can find a way to bypass the Fallen Wings background video (or any other moves that might use background video).
-------------------
I tried codecs as I said... nothing changed. I tried deleting files mentioned... nothing. I tried re-naming files such as Millenia's Fallen Wings background video to something else, still crashed.
I have an old laptop with 98 on it but the gfx card is crap, but if no other way I'll have to see if it's 'playable' on that.
Thanks to everyone so far who's tried all they can and posted their findings.
Strange to see so many faults with 1 game! If Ubisoft say XP compatible you'd think they'd make a small patch or at least correct the packaging seeing as most people are having problems with this in XP.... anyway rant over, just wanted to put the tips in 1 post for anyone new here.
All this hassle really makes me wish I'd kept my dreamcast lol

It seems this game is making ALL of us CRAZY. The same apply to me. This is my glintch. Sometimes, when the XP remember something(yes the xp, not the game), it shows a window error report and says to shutdown the game. Here's the funny part , when that windows appears, I push alt+tab once (or twice if I have another folder open), and the error is IGNORED!!! But, when a second error occurs, XP becomes a terminator and shut down the game without a single error window (xp is really rude!). I'm running the game with all files in the hard drive and with a no cd (surely the best way, since with no cd you don't have cd problems). About the wings bug. I don't have any problem (if is about the mini movie), I have installed the XP codec pack. And about the magic upgrade, notice that the menu have 2 sections. When you are in the menu, press down and it will go to another section with the magic upgrade and all of those things. But that XP bug is really drivins me CRAZY because I cannot play the game in a proper amount of time (around 10 to 10 minutes I have to shut it down). My machine is a XP Athlon + with XP SP2 and GeForce 5200. Oh. and another thing, when you are starting the game, if it gives aerror mensage because of a tmp file, reboot. It worked for me.

I know exactly what my problem is, but not how to solve it. I bought the last copy of this game from a store--brand new--and it plays fine on my system until it tries to trigger the cutscene before Garmia Tower. Then nothing. Like I said, it was the store's last copy, so I can't ask for a new one. And I'd rather try to make it work than get my $10 back.
Here is the problem: the last 9 files in disc 2's "vms" folder are corrupt. The computer will not read them and I cannot copy them to a new location. Is there any way I can legally find these 9 files?
Sky02.vms Sky03.vms Tower.vms Val05.vms Valmer01.vms Valmer02.vms Valmer06.vms Wk01.vms Wk02.vms
Thanks.

Hi guys... I have tried to tangle a bit with Grandia II to Wind XP... I found a Selution that might work...
I reinstalled my win XP, but insted of using NTFS Partion... then I used Fat32 Partition...
I would strong recommend that you only use fat32 on max 40g, after I installed WinXP and Grandia II, it works fine.. I have not experience others problems....
I called GameArts and had a talked with them, they told me, that I was lucky... and didn't have anything to do, with FAT32...
But the strange thing is, I have installed Grandia II on 4 different computers, and all 4 have fat32... and there is no problem at all...
I have a 1 more computer to go, and to do this right I installed NTFS Partion, and guess what... Grandia II Crashed...
1 Other thing I like to inform, is that there is not gonne come any patch for Grandi II... But I hope what I told you guys, that it can help you
Please Write in here, if you get any errors...
