quote wikipedia
Metallica is an American heavy metal band that formed in 1981 in Los Angeles, California. Founded when drummer Lars Ulrich posted an advertisement in a Los Angeles newspaper, Metallica's original line-up consisted of Ulrich, rhythm guitarist and vocalist James Hetfield, lead guitarist Dave Mustaine, and bassist Ron McGovney. These last two were later replaced from the band, in favor of Kirk Hammett and Cliff Burton, respectively. In September 1986, Metallica's tour bus skidded out of control and flipped, which resulted in Burton being crushed under the bus and killed. Jason Newsted replaced him less than two months later. Newsted left the band in 2001 and was replaced by Robert Trujillo in 2003.

Metallica's early releases included fast tempos, instrumentals, and aggressive musicianship that placed them as one of the "Big Four" of the thrash metal subgenre alongside Slayer, Megadeth and Anthrax. The band earned a growing fan base in the underground music community, and some critics say the 1986 release Master of Puppets is one of the most influential and "heavy" thrash metal albums. The band achieved substantial commercial success with its self-titled 1991 album, which debuted at number one on the Billboard 200. Some critics and fans believed the band changed its musical direction to appeal to the mainstream audience. With the release of Load in 1996, Metallica distanced itself from earlier releases in what has been described as "an almost alternative rock approach", and the band faced accusations of "selling out".

In 2000, Metallica was among several artists who filed a lawsuit against Napster for sharing the band's copyright-protected material for free without the band members' consent. A settlement was reached, and Napster became a pay-to-use service. Despite reaching number one on the Billboard 200, the release of St. Anger in 2003 disappointed some critics and fans with the exclusion of guitar solos, and the "steel-sounding" snare drum. A film titled Some Kind of Monster documented the recording process of St. Anger.

Metallica has released eight studio albums, two live albums, two EPs, twenty-two music videos, forty-two singles and has finished working on its upcoming ninth studio album, Death Magnetic. The band has become one of the most commercially successful and influential heavy metal acts. With 90 million records sold worldwide, including 57 million in the United States, the band has won seven Grammy Awards, and has had four albums peak at number one on the Billboard 200. The band's 1991 album, Metallica, has sold over 15 million copies, which makes it the 25th highest selling album in the United States.

Where's Live Shit: Binge & Purge? And maybe you should put in like a list of the former band members too.

Coolio. Looks great. You make a fine opening Post for a and (judging from this and GNR) Live Light.

Frayed Ends Of Sanity is one of my favorite songs off of ...And Justice For All. I love the riffs and lyrics.

re: Metallica 4.0

I've decided to relisten to every Metallica album, and have slightly rejigged my favourites order:

1) Ride The Lightning
2) Master Of Puppets
3) Death Magnetic
4) The Black Album
5) Kill 'Em All
6) ...And Justice For All
7) Reload
8) Load
9) St. Anger

I only counted their albums of original studio material, so that's why S&M and Garage Inc. aren't there. After listening to Master Of Puppets again I really did appreciate what an awesome album it is, and perhaps I was harsh in judging Death Magnetic to be better than it. However, I still stand by my opinion that Death Magnetic is easily good enough to break into the Big-Four Metallica albums, and that's why I put it third in my list.

re: Metallica 4.0

I decided to redo my favorites list a little after listening to all their studio albums as well...

Ride The Lightning > ...And Justice For All > Kill Em All > Master of Puppets > Death Magnetic > Metallica > Load > Reload > St Anger

Nope, but it's better than Self-Titled, Load, ReLoad and St Anger, so it's close.

I'll do mine after I buy Death Magnetic. But I've been listening to ...And Justice For All and Master Of Puppets and Black ALbum and Ride The Lightning alot lately. And I just don't know if it'll be better than any of those.

Btw, I thought you liked Black Album best Taker?

re: Metallica 4.0

I just bought Master Of Puppets and it should be coming in the mail within a few weeks. I'm so excited - I've heard every song off of it, but I listen to them only with youtube or something, so it'll be great having it in my collection. After this comes, I'll have RTL, MOP, TBA, and AJFA in my collection...and of course DM when it hits stores
