I'm offended that Return to Cookie Mountain doesn't have a higher position on that list.

Good list if your music tastes don't expand outside indie and a few mainstream rap acts I guess.
I guess my music taste doesn't expand outside indie and a few mainstream rap acts then.

In all seriousness I think you're pigeon-holing "indie music" a tad unfairly. There's a huge difference between the complex, multi-layered alt-rock of Radiohead and the intimate indie-folk of Bon Iver. Elsewhere you've got the clean cut, preppy indie-pop of Vampire Weekend alongside the raw garage-rock of The Libertines. But then again this is a music scene that I'm familiar with so I guess judgements on broadness are pretty relative.

Paste is essentially an indie/pop/folk/rock magazine so of course that's the slant that they're going to have. The alternative of course is to do a Rolling Stone and ass-lick EVERY single genre of music to the extent that you lose any credibility as a judge of music.

I don't even know who the hell The Avett Brothers and Gillian Welch are, and they both have albums in the top ten. Let's be serious, they can't be that good, otherwise they'd have threads in here.
They're the bland adult contemporary I was talking about, although I guess they're both more on the folk/bluegrass end of the adult contemporary spectrum...

Folk and bluegrass is the new indie guys. C'mon, if you were hip enough you would already know that.

But seriously, both the Avett Brothers and Gillian Welch are seriously good (moreso Avett Bros imo). For best folk/bluegrass stuff I would have also have thrown in some Old Crow Medicine Show and maybe a little Railroad Earth or Yonder Mountain.

I don't know if any of you guys own a record player or buy lps. But if any of you know a great place online to buy vinyl records used it'd be awesome if you can tell me where (besides the obvious sites like amazon and ebay).

MusicStack might be of use to you, I've never used it so I can't personally vouch for it though.

I've been linked there before when I was looking for a vinyl, so I assume it's legit. Yet to use though.

re: The Music Lounge [VI]

I actually saw Yacht guy live (his girlfriend was so hot), two or so years ago in some random indie club (basement) in Bristol. The first thing I said when I walked into the club was "man this blows I just missed Holy *bleep* and didn't know they were playing *continues to stare at the poster* Awesome 1.50 quids for a pint of man juice!". Oh... his music, I don't remember it.

Lady Gaga - It seems like it might be trendy/cutting edge to select her as an ‘artist of the year’ if you had an altWEbsite, then talk about her art/concept/ability to create pop Art, or something.
I can't help but agree with our own statement there.

On another note, I hate doing end of year best of lists, I always seem to find 16 other awesome albums just one month into the new year.

Anyone here a fan of ska? I was hoping to find a couple of lesser known bands, preferably ones who play a lot of revival/third wave ska. No poppy stuff.

ska that isn't poppy? it's one of the most radio friendly, easy to listen to kinds of music ever. the fact that it's not massively popular among mainstream audiences baffles the hell out of me.

Nah, not all ska music is poppy. Granted, you can't compare third wave ska bands to trad bands; there's a huge difference in the style of music.

I like in between bands, if that makes any sense. Bands like: The Skalatones, Might Mighty Bosstones, Long Beach Dub Allstars, Skinnerbox play the style of music I'm after.

Man, I was looking through my iTunes, and man I have some weird band names there.

We Butter the Bread with Butter
iwrestledabearonce
Job for a Cowboy

Man, I've never even listened to these bands before, and somehow they're on my itunes. Weird.

Anyone here listen to Mnemic? It's one of those Heavy Metal/Death metal bands.
