Them Crooked Vultures

Them Crooked Vultures is an American hard rock supergroup that formed in Los Angeles, California in 2009. Comprising vocalist and guitarist Josh Homme (of Queens of the Stone Age, Eagles of Death Metal and Kyuss fame), former Led Zeppelin bassist and keyboardist John Paul Jones and drummer Dave Grohl, who currently fronts Foo Fighters and has performed with Nirvana and Tenacious D, the band also performs live with Alain Johannes, Homme's bandmate in QOTSA. The band performed their first show in August 2009, with an album said to be in the works.

And some history...

NME reported in July 2009 that the trio were recording in Los Angeles. The collaboration was first publicly mooted by Grohl in a 2005 interview with Mojo, in which he declared "The next project that I’m trying to initiate involves me on drums, Josh Homme on guitar, and John Paul Jones playing bass. That’s the next album. That wouldn’t suck." Of the nascent project, Homme's wife Brody Dalle commented in July 2009 that "I’m not at liberty to talk about it… but I think [the project] is pretty *bleep*ing amazing. Just beats and sounds like you’ve never heard before."

The trio performed their first show together at Metro Chicago in Illinois on August 9, 2009. Music website NME.com announced on August 5 that "UK appearances are being considered for the near future, while an album is also expected to follow too". The performance featured an appearance by Queens of the Stone Age guitarist Alain Johannes.

On August 12, a 14 second clip of the song "Nobody Loves Me and Neither Do I" was posted on the group's Youtube channel.

Their second show is going to be in the Melkweg in Amsterdam on August 19th. The presale starts the day before, on the 18th, tickets can only be bought at the door of the Melkweg at 18.00, limited to one ticket a person. Tickets will cost €37.50.

Right, so this band is simply genius and I can't tell you how excited I am to get their debut album. DISCUSS
BTW, that info above is from Wikipedia

Hahah, man, what a combination. I have a feeling, though, that the thought of these three men making music together excites me more than their music itself actually will, since it's probably just going to end up sounding like forgettable generic Foo Fighters-esque rock. I sure wouldn't mind being proven wrong.

Yeah that's pretty much my fear exactly, a 14 second clip and a line-up isn't much to go on as I said before. Plus I don't really like Josh Homme's latest shit with Eagles of Death Metal and all that but I haven't lost all faith in him, so I'll still be looking forward to the album.

I like Homme's style as a vocalist and guitarist more than Grohl's; plus Grohl is a slick stick man and needs to be behind the kit. And John Paul Jones, really? Something interesting, at least.

re: Them Crooked Vultures

There's no disputing the line-up packs a considerable helping of raw talent but when did any of the members of the supergroup last produce anything worth getting excited about. I was a huge QOTSA and Foos fan as a kid but it's been 7 years since Songs For The Deaf and 10 years since There Is Nothing Left To Lose. I'm sure the live shows will be great fun but I've not got especially high hopes for the band's new material.

re: Them Crooked Vultures

Yeah, seriously. Outside of live performances I can't see this band having much appeal if it's just going to be Homme singing alone with backing musicians who we're told to be John Paul Jones and Dave Grohl. It sounds identical to something QOTSA would have produced, and for all we know it could just be session musicians on the studio album. What's the point of all this if Grohl and Homme aren't even going to sing a duet? :(

re: Them Crooked Vultures

I just listened to this song today a couple of times, and once on the radio last night. And whilst typing this now I can't remember for the life of me remember anything about it.

Absolutely nothing stands out, alas:

re: Them Crooked Vultures

Well, to me I think they're great. Deffinatly a lot better than most of rock bands out right now, plus it's only their debut album. I'm sure there is more to come.
And I don't think their songs sound like Queens at all.

Came in here to post that, here's a link. I'll post my thoughts on the album once I'm done; I'm on track 5 (Elephants) right now.

re: Them Crooked Vultures

There isn't a crazy amount of variety throughout the album, overall, though there are a few standouts. I'm sure I'll come to appreciate it more with accumulated listens.
That said, I still find it to be an enjoyable gig. The band's lineup got me pretty excited from the get-go, and I wasn't sure what to expect. The result isn't anything new, which is where the real disappointment lies.
There is nothing here that couldn't be done by Queens, EoDM, Foo Fighters, et al.
Alas, this is none of those. This is Them Crooked Vultures, and even if the sound doesn't shine in its own class as bold, unique, or biting, it works. It fits into a formulated structure that every project Grohl and Homme have participated in in the past decade, has worked for them, and continues to work.

If nothing else, think of it as a new album from any such band. Even if there's some missed potential here, it's a group that can be appreciated as less than the sum of its parts, and that's perfectly fine.

Well, i think the album is amazing. No One Loves Me... and Gunman are the best tracks imo.
