re: Slayer |

I thought Christ Illusion was the true successor to Seasons. Everything between the two (except Undisputed Attitude; nice tribute to old hardcore bands) were either decent enough or horrible.
Thanks to Christ Illusion, I'm actually looking forward to World Painted Blood, and the songs Velocity posted just make it harder to wait for release date. (of course I could just wait for a leak, but I actually have high hopes for this album, so no leaks for me; I use money!) -------------------

Has anyone here heard the new Slayer album. I heard the first song at my friends house and it sounds pretty good, hopefully I'll get a chance to listen to it all tomorrow.
Anyone else heard a leak yet? ------------------- ![]()

I got the leak, but I've only listened to the singles so far. Sounds pretty weak IMO. The production in particular is crap, it has no strength at all.

This is a pretty shit offering from Slayer, but what else can you expect from them after they produced God Hates Us All? Christ Illusion, yeah, it was a bit of fresh air, but nothing special, and the new one sounds like a piss poor attempt of redoing Christ Illusion.

I'm kinda sick of every song of theirs usually starting with the old "bass snare bass snare bass snare" at super speed, I really liked christ illusion, probably more than their classic material! their stuff like jihad and cult and skeleton christ is kick ass

The "bass snare", "slow riff transcending to fast riffs" and "fast riff" intros are basically the best ways to kick off an ass kicking thrash metal tune! Just about every thrash metal band does the old "bass snare bass snare bass snare" at super speed a few times per album.

Yeah World Painted Blood is not too bad, nothing too new or interesting by Slayer though, which is what I expected. Solid effort though apart from that damn guitar sound! On some of the songs it shits me so bad.

Just heard the song World Painted Blood and tbf it's pretty bad, as already said it is solid. But it isn't anything that I would want to listen to over and over again.

Haven't heard World Painted Blood yet (I'll wait until the official release date and get the CD), but I do think Slayer's strongest offering is South Of Heaven, if for no other reason than the brutal drum production on that album.
The idea of them disbanding in 2012 after a trilogy of new albums is genius though. Great way to go out. ------------------- ![]() EXCLUSIVELY on Playstation 3!

South Of Heaven isn't quite Slayer's strongest. It's a great album, but not quite their best album. That would have to be Hell Awaits (could've been Haunting The Chapel, but it felt just a little too short). Hell Awaits is pretty much everything Slayer and the entire thrash metal subgenre represents at the peak.
If there's any consolation, though, South Of Heaven is their most melodic offering to date, by far. ------------------- quote Keiichi

Honestly if it wasn't for the awesomeness of Dave Lombardo I probably wouldn't listen to any Slayer at all.
I probably do like SoH the best as it is their most melodic work - I've never felt that their heaviest, fastest thrash work was equal to the heaviest thrash of their contemporaries Metallica or Megadeth. Metallica always had an aethemic quality to even their most brutal songs, whilst Megadeth - particularly on Rust In Peace with Marty Friedman on lead guitar - are just staggeringly technical in all elements of their thrash, which kept them sounding fresh. Slayer, for me, never really had any great aethemic quality, and their fastest riffs just sound too generic - I don't really rate Kerry King as a guitarist. That's why the drums save them for me - Lombardo is just incredible. ------------------- ![]() EXCLUSIVELY on Playstation 3!

re: Slayer |
quote Taker4everYes, I was quite disappointed when he left between Seasons and Chirst Illusion. The replacement wasn't that great and couldn't really fill the void left by Lombardo's departure, but then again, the replacement was drumming for Slayer's shittiest full lengths. quote Taker4ever quote Taker4everBeing a fan of more traditional/melodic metal and your general dislike of death metal probably doesn't help your case haha Metal of Slayer's magnitude is more for headbanging and about face-melting riffs than anything you'd expect from Metallica and Megadeth. Kerry and Jeff were never meant to impress the listener with technicality, since you should be too busy headbanging to really give a rat's ass. However, the riffs off Hell Awaits have some degrees of technicality to them. quote Taker4everTrue, Marty Friedman has technical riffs all over the place without getting fappy, but after his departure, Megadeth's riffs were never the same. Dave's riffs are decent at best, I'll admit that, but not all that technical (at least, not at Marty's level), and the other supporting guitarists are in the same boat. Listen to anything off The World Needs A Hero or United Abominations, then Rust In Peace, and you'll see quite a difference. But yeah, Megadeth always kept their sound a bit fresh. Say Taker, have you listened to Show No Mercy? It's more influenced by Judas Priest, Iron Maiden and course Venom (and to a lesser amount Motörhead) than everything else they've ever done, and I think you'll enjoy it a lot. ------------------- quote Keiichi
