When the performance overshadows the music |
|
Have any of you really liked a song, but then watched the music video and suddenly didn't really care for the song any more?
Example, Lips of an Angel by Hinder. The song is alright in my book, but I watched the music video and the lead singer has the most distracting hand gestures. Maybe it's just my obsessive compulsive personality, but when the lead singer has a strange performance quirk, it makes it really hard for me to watch the band perform. Now even if I hear the song I will always think of what the singer does with his hands and I just won't be able to listen to it. The same goes for watching a band perform live. For me, when a band is too over the top or quirky it just distracts me from the music. My Chemical Romance's new... personality if you will, is ridiculous. Their last cd was really great, but I don't even want to listen to the new one because the band itself has become so ridiculous. I went to Taste of Chaos last year with bands like As I Lay Dying, and for every song they would, at some point, all start head banging in unison. Is it just me or does that just look ridiculous? It made me laugh, and I'm not sure I should be laughing during an As I Lay Dying song... So I ask, is it just me? Or can the way a band performs really affect the way you hear their music? -------------------

I wouldn't say the performance but some bands like Hard-Fi and Arctic Monkeys they have talent and they are amazing British indie bands, but they just have this uncalled for arrogance when live and it just puts me off, luckily for Arctic Monkeys their music is incredible enough to detract me but i just cannot stand arrogant performers.
Sure i can expect bands like Black Sabbath or Iron Maiden to go around with a slight arrogant nature, but they have been producing relative quality for 20+ years, but some new bands come along as if the public owe them something. -------------------

A perfect example of this is Micheal Stipe from R.E.M. Watching that guy make an attempt at dancing just ruins the entire music video, but it really doesn't ruin the song for me, I just don't watch the music video anymore.

First and foremost, I'm pretty surprised to see Kitta here on the forums again, I have to say it's been awhile.
There's this one Guns and Roses video, the song is great, but the video is the most ridiculous thing I've ever seen. A small chapel on the outside but it's massive on the inside, Slash in leather chaps with jeans underneath, it's way too distracting for me. ------------------- ![]()

The lead singer of Hinder looks R3T@2D3D in Lips of an Angel. Performence kinda changed how much i like it by a little but the radio changed everything. I used to like Lips of an Angel until the radio played it about 1000000 times. I hate it when they over play songs. those bastards

Holy shit, It's Kitta *gets the KY ready*!
And yeah, definitly agreeing with the headbanging thing. I went and saw Danzing on the "Blackest of the Black" tour thing, lots of black metal bands. Every group did that, some did swirls, but it was all the same, made me crack up. -------------------

Yesh
When I first listened to As I Lay Dying's Darkest Nights on Shadows Are Security, I really liked the song. But when I watched the new video when it first came out, I just didn't like it anymore because of the way the video was made. Terrible really. I always skip the song now cause it reminds me of that video T_T ------------------- ![]() "Soft words bled from beauty..and lips to mine.."

I think it works the opposite ways too. I've seen shows of bands I'm not particularly fond of (or immensely dislike, for that matter) but found myself content with the show just because of the great stage presence. Controlling the stage and being musically skilled are two different things, and people who excel at both are the ones who win in my book.

Never talk crap about the unison circular head bang.
That is if they were doing it that way. If it was that "other" headbang. Diss away. ------------------- ![]()

quoteHaha scene kids ftw! Dllinger Escape Plan are kinda the opposite way around for me. I love their stage presence (they just go nuts) and then you can't really hear the music but i'd prefer watching them then listening tbh. ------------------- I <3 LIVERPOOL
