Overclocking the 8600GT

I recently learned about overclocking (yes I know, I'm not a computer genius) and installed the free version of RivaTuner. I am trying to find a good overclock setting for my videocard. Because my card doesn't let me overclock Shaders, as it only gives me the option of Core and Memory, I need to find a good number for each one.

Normally, I can run games such as COD4 at high settings and hit 50-80 FPS, sometimes over 100. So I tried overclocking with the combo of 701 Core and 450 Memory. This, instead of increasing performance, seemed to hinder the FPS and cause sudden drops in performance at random times. So I tried a few more, and cannot find a good setting to run it at.

Here is my info for RivaTuner:

Max for Core: 900
Default for Core: 600
Min for Core: 300

Max for Memory: 1080
Default for Memory: 720
Min for Memory: 360

My Specs:

CPU: Intel Pentinum D 2.66GHz
Videocard:Geforce 8600GT 256mb
RAM: 1GB

Can someone please tell me what's a good setting for Core and Memory? I cannot access shader, not sure why but whatever.

Any help would be appretiated!

re: Overclocking the 8600GT

If you overclocked that much, you should be seeing some gains, easily. Probably 8-10 fps.

But here's my view on overclocking your video card. If you don't need it, don't stress it. If you are getting those high frames per second already in the game you are playing, it doesn't need an overclock.

On the other hand, FOR ME, in Crysis with all max settings, I get 32fps or so, but with an overclock, that 32fps will go to 40+ fps. And, in that case, it is noticeable and worth it.
