re: question about 8

What's mainly different to FF7 is the fact that the junction system has replaced MP. Meaning, you assign certain spells to stats and, depending on the spell power and amount, you get a boost.

Curse or blessing, you pick. I enjoyed junctioning, but I can see why others didn't.

re: question about 8

ff8 isnt that hard it is easy to level up but be prepared if your fighting the tougher monsters like ruby dragon because its breath can hit 2000-9000 depending on its level and your vitality

through halfway of disc 2 and the end of disc 3 you might be lucky with some of the monsters in disc 4 you wont be so lucky

Junctioning is good. I'm glad it doesn't appear in any other game, but it certainly gave me hours of fun, countless times. One of the problems is that your characters are way too dependant on it. For example: A level 100 party with crappy junctioning could not beat the final boss, but a level 1 party with advanced junctioning could do it blindfolded. Once you learn how to do it, the game is a pushover (apart from the secret boss Omega, who always manages to kill be at least once).

re: question about 8

The battle style is pretty similar to that of FFVII. The battles are turn-based with the use of the Active Time Bar. Each character has a unique limit break. The staple items of the series perform similar functions such as potions, phoenix downs, etc. Each character uses magic and summons.

The battle system itself is junctioning magic rather than equipping materia to your equipment. In FFVIII there is no MP gauge. Spells are drawn from monsters and draw points within the game. You equip your summons, known as Guardian Forces, to have access to certain abilities. As your GFs gain more Ability Points they learn different abilities that will help your character.

Also the monsters level up with the characters in your party thus giving the monsters stronger magic to draw from. If you keep your characters at low levels throughout the entire game the monsters you face in battle will be weaker and easier to kill but will only offer lower-level magic spells. You can get around this by using hidden draw points throughout the world map to draw powerful magic to boost your stats.

As stated earlier, a low-level character with great magic junctioned makes the game incredibly easy compared to a high-level character with crappy magic junctioned.

Finally, the limit breaks do not have a gauge that fills up as you take damage. The limit breaks in FFVIII are usually achieved when your character's HP level is low and/or when there are multiple status effects on the party.

Hope that gives you a better understanding of how the mechanics work. Good luck and enjoy the game.
