Books & Literature RFS |

Hey all,
As you may or may not have noticed, I have once again been given the pleasure of moderating this wonderful forum. I don't intend to change much of the atmosphere of this place as it is in my mind what makes B&L the great place it is. This place has been around a long time, so let's keep it going. The name of the game at the moment is community. We have a start to it and hopefully we can see it grow. If anyone has any suggestions or requests to achieve this goal toss them out (by means of posting, not of trashing them). Cheers. -------------------

If someone were to make a spiffy looking banner advertising this forum I would definitely put it in my signature. I would make one myself, but I only have MS Paint.

We could start with Light Druid not burying his mod tag underneath all his other mod tags.
I think the move to Lounges should help build a community. The people who want to talk about books will come here and discuss. -------------------

Moving it to the Lounges category will definitely help.
In terms of community building, I always find that a GD helps build a core community of posters, but the nature of this forum is such that people will just talk about the books they love really. Maybe some sort of Book of the Month feature. I think a new header would be cool as well, while I like the current header I think it could be expanded, maybe more classic titles on it or something. -------------------

I'm sorry.
On the topic of banners, an idea I had just last night was using something like the trademark logo of the Buy N' Large corporation off of Wall-e (could be B&L instead of BnL if it would be better). Then possibly do a little phrase afterwards like their, "We put the star back in executive starliner." All I could think of before falling asleep last night was "We put the the class back in classical novels." Also, what are everyone's thoughts on Book Club/Reading Club type things, where a group would all read and discuss a book? -------------------

Book Club sounds like a great idea, personally wouldn't be able to participate until the summer though unless y'all would want to read some of my university novels like Frankenstein

I already read Frankenstein last semester! And I'm in the same boat as IG, I have hundreds of pages of reading per week and wouldn't have the time to read full novels until summer. I could do short stories or poetry for now though.

I don't have quite as much of a workload as IG or Dudeguy, but I also think that having a book club on short stories is a great idea. They could be held on a weekly or bi-monthly basis and we could have a book club on a novel during the summer months or break periods.
I also thought it would be nice to have a quote thread. You'll be hard pressed to find a member who doesn't believe that books are the most wonderful source of deep and thought evoking quotes. Maybe we could pick one or two quotes from a certain work and discuss them?

Last time that we tried a book club it fell through after a few books.
That being said, I would love to see it get off the ground again. ------------------- SQUEAK

I think if we can get one off to good start we could be able to keep up its longevity. I kind of like the short story/poetry idea for the school year season.
Also, here is the banner RiotType kindly fixed up for my request. An example of what I was thinking is in my signature now. ![]() -------------------

I would totally participate, but I'm busy until about May-ish, maybe June. At that point I'd try my hardest to participate.

Tell me which book, but some of you lazy bums will have to show up. I read the Clockwork Orange a while back for one of these book clubs and that died out. *hisses*

Well, I suppose we could do Frankenstein, as IG and I would already have it covered.
As for short stories, I've been wanting to read The Overcoat by Nikolai Gogol. The Nose and The Diary of a Madman also by Gogol are both very good. I also think any short story by Kafka would work well. ------------------- "A great book should leave you with many experiences, and slightly exhausted. I think that having a book club a week is a bit too much. I say you make it a bi-monthly event, so more people have the opportunity to join in and so they can have more time to read the works, even if they're only short stories.
I say you start off small with short stories and then, if everything seems to be working out, you move on to discuss novels. I'll be rocking the Books & Lit banner as soon as my slavery is over.
