On an actual GD, I think they always serve a purpose in building a community in any forum. I think it would be a good move, personally.

The second idea sounds more like something similar to the Writer's Lounge tbh, unless I'm misunderstanding you!

I like the quote game idea, that sounds like fun. As for the header footer contest, I can't do graphics worth a damn so I'm indifferent hehe, but if it gets more traffic in then go for it.

I think the fact this forum is about books means it'll never be as active as Music or Movies, because a lot of teenagers can't be bothered reading, but maybe the best way to build a community is to just advertise the forum more. Maybe PM people who seem a bit older and more interested in reading if you run into them, use signatures more and just slowly get word out. I know that sounds really simple minded, but holding things within the forum will only work so much if people don't even visit here in the first place.

Signatures would be a good idea, especially "deceptive" ones like what mandos used. I know I fell for it.

Ones saying "secret porn forum" or "moderator forum" probably wouldn't be good ideas even though they would get clicked a time or two.
