re: Guilty pleasures |

I suppose Harry Potter would be the obvious one, although I didn't think of it as a guilty pleasure until after I read a few posts in this thread.
Another would be the so-called Twilight Saga. I can't really explain what made me want to keep reading them.... They're nothing special at best and annoying at worst.... Breaking Dawn was especially awful. But anyway. Also, one more: the Warriors series by Erin Hunter. The characters are a group of cats that are divided into four "clans" and have battles over prey, territory, etc. Definitely kiddish, but they keep me entertained now and then nonetheless. -------------------

Guilty pleasures..back when I took pleasure in reading..Funny stuff..
Like Harry Harrison's The Stainless Steel Rat... Jack Vance's Planet of Adventure... Those were heady days back when I was a living human being rather than being the undead I now am...

The Stainless Steel Rat should not be a guilty pleasure, it should be proudly proclaimed. XD
I can't tell you how many times I have been razzed for reading Shakespeare outside of a class assignment. Granted I'm not especially fond of his tragedies (what happens? They go insane and die, not necessarily in that order), but Love's Labor's Lost remains my favorite comedy from the Bard. ^^; ------------------- Cooking Quiz: Round 4 answers have been posted! what they need to make is a Grand Theft Harvest game, now THAT would be fun =3 XD

So you like the stainless steel rat...?
Don't know if those books are out of print but a science fiction fan should read them at least once... I think Jack Vance also wrote the Dying Earth and the Demon Princes...those were guilty pleasures.. Roger Zelazny's 9 Princes in Amber...I always thought Amber would make a good RPG..maybe someday someone will buy the rights to it and make an rpg based on it..and maybe a movie as well now we know Hollywood has run out of all the graphic novels and is looking for the next new thing... Gordon R.Dickson The Outposter.I met him once..a nice man... another book probably very few people know about with their preoccupation with twilight, and similar themes...

*slaps Hannibal soundly*
Jack Vance won two Hugos, a Nebula award, two World Fantasy awards and an Edgar. That's not a guilty pleasure, that's a top rated writer. As, it goes without saying, is Zelazny, read and get the point of the thread for gods sakes quote SolitaireQuite so. quote StormyI honestly believe HP has to be a guilty pleasure unless you're under fourteen, or you're reading it aloud to your kids/nieces whatever. ------------------- ![]()

I have read thousands of sf and fantasy books, probably more than my detractor ever saw much less read... But that's ok.. Children these days... Anything you read and enjoy is a guilty pleasure... Joe Haldeman..The Forever War...no not Iraq but something else..and yes I met Haldeman as well, back when I was a living human being... I enjoyed it so it was a definite guilty pleasure...

No, anything you're slightly ashamed to take out in public is a Guilty pleasure. Why the hell would anyone be ashamed of reading a pulitzer prize winning book for instance?
quote Hannibal LecterHighly unlikely you match my consumption of books tbh, given your woeful English comprehension, although I wouldn't claim to be a fanatic about sci-fi. And yes, I've read The Forever war, and Forever Peace I don't know, stupid people these days... ------------------- ![]()

quote TurkagentHaha. Same here. I love John Grisham novels. I tend to only read science books, and I hate lawyers, politics, politicians, etc. However, I love a good John Grishman novel. My favorite has to be The King of Torts. ------------------- Science is interesting; if you don't agree, you can *bleep* off. - Richard Dawkins

Inkheart, Inkspell, Inkdeath. And just about any other book I can get my hands on. Oh, and Warriors. I just love those books! I'm on the third series, and still re-reading the first ones. I have read 27 Warriors books. And Seekers. They are kind of guilty pleasures, but I still love them. ~Yoshi ------------------- ![]()

Yup.
I was "forced" into reading Twilight by my girlfriend. I then continued to read in order to "Figure out what made them such a success". At least, that's what I've been telling people.
