re: Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings? |

Never read Harry Potter, and I've only seen the first movie, years ago when it came out. The movie was just boring and too childish for me, maybe the books are better? I don't know.
I've read Tolkien's three major works (The Hobbit, LoTR, The Silmarillion). And he put so much info and decades of his life into them. You get characters in LoTR referencing people from thousands of years earlier, singing songs in languages that he invented, and telling stories within stories. Then you have The Silmarillion which pretty much is the bible of Middle Earth with the hundreds of thousands of years of wars, battles, and places. Even all the places that he names, the rivers, mountains. And the people that have like three names in different languages. It's so much information, it's hard to "get" at first. But I won't say LoTR > Harry Potter, because I haven't read HP. quote EvilZeroGandalf has barely any powers compared to other people, like Melkor/Morgoth and the Valar. ------------------- Faith: Making A Virtue Out of Not Thinking

Having read LoTR trilogy, Silmarilion and the Hobbit, as well as all Harry Potter related novels as well, I have to say that LoTR is better.
Lord of the Rings is set in a completely mythical world with several thousand years of history created by Tolkein. With that, there are races, culture, languages (which you read about in the Silmarilion and The Lost Tales). The brevity of that cannot be compared with Harry Potter, set in modern England. Whereas J.K Rowling also writes a bit about the history of wizards and that in her novels, it just cannot compare to the depth of what Tolkein wrote. The deeper meanings of Tolkein's texts (remember that these books were published right after WWII) have startling parallels with our modern world, and unfortunately, without actually studying the text, many people don't even realise that. The richness of Tolkein's texts, for me, puts LoTR ahead. That's not to take anything away from Rowling's books, which were entertaining, just not as well written. Pretty much though, this: quoteis what I was trying to say -------------------

re: Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings? |

I actually read through this whole thread early this morning when I couldn't sleep. Insomnia does crazy things eh? Saw my first post in here too and I'm glad I had a brain back then.
I remember reading Lord of the Rings back when I was in Grade 6. I actually read them for school. But not like because they made me read the books but for some read log thing. My step dad gave me the books and said these were books he grew up with as a kid and books that I should read. I believe I read the Hobbit the previous year before and I loved it. So my parents got me into LotR and not school. But I read the books so I could get a mark in school. Haha hopefully that makes sense. I grew up with LotR and it has been my favorite book since. Unfortunately I only read FotR,TTT and RotK once and that was back when I was in Grade 6(8 years ago). After reading through this thread, I actually want to read The Hobbit, Lord of the Rings and the other books Tolkien wrote. If someone wants to give me a list of what he wrote or what you recommend then that would be great. I could look it up but I like to hear other peoples opinions. I do like Harry Potter, read all of the books but I don't think it could ever compare to Lord of the Rings. TLA summed it up really for me. Just after reading through this thread, I want to get back into reading LotR and the other books that he wrote. ------------------- ![]() "When you go astray, I'll be there to punch you back."

quote DevastateFor people such as this (yourself included of course Devastate), what parts of it were boring for you? I am asking this completely without sarcasm, because I know all too well the amount of detail can be daunting in them. Just asking out of mere curiosity. -------------------

Harry Potter.
I like LotR too, but the names drive me crazy... ------------------- "I agree that our popularity has hit a peak.

quote Wuppertal Wait a second. Are you saying that childish book Harry Potter is better than the books that took years to write, that have absolutely nothing wrong with them by J.R.R Tolkien, because you don't like the title? I've lost any of the little faith that I once saw in you. -------------------

Oh wow this thread...how it brings back memories T_T
I think it's depressing, actually, that once it was Harry Potter as the upcomer challenging the established LotR....whereas now we see more discussions of "Harry Potter or Twilight" online. The general quality of literature seems to be declining >_> EDIT: I read my old posts in this thread. A lot of time has passed indeed... I wouldn't go that far. Jordan did great things for literature and the fantasy genre during his time, and Brandon Sanderson is apparently following up quite nicely in his footsteps.
I know not everyone has the same love for the background and detailed history in stories such as the Lord of the Rings as I do, but that doesn't stop me from wishing they did. It is probably the biggest reason that sets Tolkien's books above the rest for me. -------------------

I tried reading the LOTR books after the first movie came out, but couldn't really get into it. I was probably too young at the time, and should probably look at reading them through now that I'm a little less inclined to put them down after 100 pages.
Until then though I'll have to stick to HP.
