Aha! Novelizations of movies. Are they better or worse than the film version?

Most are crap, compared to the book. There are a few ghood ones out there, but right now, my mind is blank.

Every movie is built off of some sort of literature, but published ones are getting more common nowadays. For older movies, it's hard to really tell if it was off of a book, escpecially if the book wasn't as well known at first. Such as The Godfather. Didn't know about Mario Puzo until a ways after I heard of//seen the film.
