The most you can have is 100 lives, but the most you can see it go up to is 9. However, you will still gain lives after 9, but the counter doesn't go up. Let's say you had 20 lives, but it said 9. If you died, it would still say 9 lives, but you'd have 19. 100 is the max you can carry.
