Unused Car data stored in disk's MISC hidden folder |
|
Whoever came up with the tank, helicopter, airplane (not really proof for the airplane, though), black bloke and casino "cheats" obviously came across the hidden folder on the driver 2 disc. You'll find a hidden folder in Driver 2's percache data byte called "MISC" which has a bunch of weird stuff, like graphics of unused stuff and stuff already in the game. There's an unused character who seems to be a serious variation of Vasquez at least.
This folder contains 2 chopper graphics (and possibly their code), airplane graphics, a mini-pitbull graphics (the gun emplacement has the gun "hole" plugged up), a giant boat that looks like the Havana port-side inoperable ferry (with the giant ramps). It probably has the coding for other vehicles. Other than the chunking cities, things happening at once and super-high quality FMV's, these are what probably take up lots of space. I used a Ukrainian Mac OS program called Universal Extraction Magic to dump the contents. Locating the hidden folder from a pointer byte wouldn't have been possible if I didn't dump the memory. Obviously, there must be other ways to reach this hidden directory and I suspect there are other hidden directories. Their compression algorithm, however, makes a surprising amount of data/content to be able to fit on a PS1 CD. From what I know, if you replace the unlockables data (for the secret cars, areas, etc. or whatever) with the data in this folder, we might just see what the helicopter usage (at least) is like. However, contrary to the "cheats", the helicopter seems to have a header reference to Las Vegas city, not Havana or Rio. Experts, do your job and post videos!

Can anyone else confirm this?
It seems strange that they'd even both making helicopter textures/models when the graphics are already shabby enough down at ground level and with a low view distance.

It doesn't SEEM to be on your disc because the directory(ies) is a b*tch to find just like that. Actually, without using UEM, one can actually come acroos ALL data, including every bit of hidden data. However, this is the equivalent of opening up a critical file (.grp, .dll, etc.) with a text editor, like notepad, and playing around in there. Sure it's all in front of you, but it's garbled mumbo jumbo like a language on crack.
As I originally predicted, there does seem to be other hidden folders: I found two more, but their contents seem strange (I don't understand their purpose, if any... maybe just scraps) and irrelevant to all the "cool vehicles" and fake cheats. However, to come across these other two, I had to tie UEM (the latest, bootleg version changing the first word to "Ukrainiversal") to a debugger. Basically, eliminating what I already saw (and could access) on the disc, from a list in UEM, I began scouring the unwritten data. The debugger showed several pointer bytes, ranging from simple to complex. Some of these belong to the "MISC" folder I first discovered. For the rest, I compiled the data referred to by the simple bytes. That's how I came across the two newer folders. I'll come back if I find out what the others have or what these two folders are for... OR if I get anything else significant.

I couldn't arse myself to find anything else.
HOWEVER, I tried something new. Upon putting the helicopter data as a replacement for the secret racing mini-games, I simply couldn't access the hidden games menu. Then I tried replacing Las Vegas' secret car data. Lo and behold: Upon cycling through the car selection screen in Vegas, I came across a black picture in the place of an image of the car. The vehicle is none other than helicopter... BUT, it's almost no different than a car. It's missing a lot of animation frames and essentially functions like a car; it has no sound effects and simply disappears if you get out of it. The only difference is that if you go up an incline (rising road, grassy/sandy hill, etc.) and try to go back down, you're stuck at that altitude. I guess you can call this "flying". But it's not worth it. The game crashes half the time you're in the air and you often hit invisible walls. It's too glitchy.
