Dragon Gate is sending Masaaki Mochizuki & Don Fujii to participate on the show. All-Japan: The promotion held a public press conference to announce the joining of former 6th level Makushita, Ryota Hama. Hama, a native from Ibaraki city, Osaka, stands at 176cm tall and 185kg wide (or roughly 6'4", 296), and his sumo won/loss/draw record was 235/169/114. Hama began his sumo career training at the age of 15 back in 1994 and recently retired this summer doing to knee injuries. Hama admitted to the press that he was a big fan of pro-wrestling during his schoolchild years and wanted to learn the foundation of pro-wrestling. Keiji Mutoh stated that he is holding out hope for the newcomer, and almost seemed as if he was intent on rushing Hama into the ring, as even Kaz Hayashi stated that Hama was not ready to assume a full wrestling load. Mutoh reminded the press of the last sumo to come out of the "Mutoh Room", citing Akebono's progress over the years as a wrestler and his beginnings in All Japan back in 2005, and that Hama would be just fine. When asked on the differences between sumo and pro-wrestling, Hama stated that while in sumo you needed instantaneous power, while in pro-wrestling you need an abundance of tenacity, and that the sit-ups and running that the newcomers and young wrestlers participate in are very "tight". Hama closed by saying he wanted to aim his style after Yutaka Yoshie, who could move his weight around efficiently and gracefully. The promotion also announced a Taiwan show for 11/16 at Taipei Dome. DDT Exercise Show from a flea market Sunday: Yukihiro Abe & Daisuke Sasaki beat Keisuke Ishii & Rion Mizuki in 8:51. Sasaki pinned Ishii with a German Suplex hold. KUDO & Yasu Urano beat Michael Nakazawa & Tomomitsu Matsunaga in 14:09. KUDO pinned Nakazawa after a Vertical Drop-Style Diving Double Knee Drop. In a 16, yes 16, man tag match, KUDO, Yasu Urano, Danshoku Dieno, Muscle Sakai, Kota Ibushi, Rion Mizuki, Daisuke Sasaki & Keisuke Ishii beat Sanshiro Takagi, Tanomusaku Toba, Daichi Kakimoto, Michael Nakazawa, Tomomitsu Matsunaga, Yukihiro Abe, Futoshi Miwa & Jun Inomata in 11:30. Ibushi pinned Inomata after a running powerbomb. Throughout the day at the flea market, Rikiya Shindo drew portraits of fans, MIKAMI sold old DDT show DVDs, Sanshiro Takagi arm wrestled fans, Tanomusaku Toba sold 18 year old and over material and Muscle Sakai sold the jumping box that was used 2 years ago at the Wrestling Exposition show. There was no music equipment, so Rikiya Shindo introduced the wrestlers and sang their entrance themes, though he forgot the themes of both of the young teams in the first match. Michael Nakazawa did some bench pressing before his match. Inomata, who is retired, was at the event as a fan and ended up participating in the main event. The more the better for Liger, I think it only further cements his legacy as one of the greatest Jr. Heavyweights ever, if not the greatest. I mean, who else might be in his league besides Kanemoto, Tiger Mask 4, maybe a couple others? Yeah, could make a case for KENTA, but give him a few more years.
Dragon Gate: After yesterday's show, ICHIKAWA stole the Open The Owarai Gate belt from Johnson Florida and because repeated attempts to contact the title belt commissioner were met with only his voicemail, ICHIKAWA has just been recognized as the title holder and thus becomes the 7th Open The Owarai Gate Champion. Hollywood Stalker Ichikawa will make US appearance on 8/2 & 8/3. He'll be wrestling while CIMA also makes appearances to sell tickets for the 9/5 show. New Japan: Keiji Mutoh wants to next defend the IWGP Heavyweight Title on the 8/31 All-Japan event at Ryogoku. This would mark the first outside defense since 1996 in the UWF-i. President Sugehayashi of New Japan responded to Mutoh's request saying that it was totally not out of the question and he would propose it to the board of directors and have a decision as soon as possible. No word on a challenger but it's said the likely next one will be the G1 Climax winner. If that's the case, we'll know who at the end of the 8/17 show. DDT: Yukihiro Abe & Masa Takanashi participation in STYLE-E on 7/19: Masato Shibata & Masashi Takeda beat Ken Ohka & Yukihiro Abe in 12:40. Takeda pinned Abe. Masa Takanashi beat STYLE-E Openweight Champion Kazuhiro Tamura in 25:07 to win the title and become the 4th STYLE-E Openweight Champion. Misc.: The end of the Michael Nakazawa (DDT) vs. m.c.KZ (Dragon Gate) match from CHIKARA King Of Trios Night 3 was featured on this week's CHIKARA Podcast-A-Go-Go. 7/23 edit: New Japan from TONYAMACHI Big Sight: They claimed 600 paid (overflow). Yujiro & Tetsuya Naito beat Kazuchika Okada & Nobuo Yoshihashi in 10:38. Yujiro beat Yoshihashi with a crab hold. (I've noticed that almost every opening match in NJPW ends this way) Shiro Koshinaka, Jushin Liger & AKIRA beat Milano Collection AT, Minoru & Prince Devitt in 10:56. Koshinaka pinned Minoru after a jumping hip attack. Giant Bernard & Rick Fuller beat Manabu Nakanishi & Mitsuhide Hirasawa in 9:52. Fuller pinned Hirasawa after Fusion Bomb. Hiroyoshi Tenzan, Tiger Mask 4 & Ryusuke Taguchi beat Jado, Gedo & Tomoaki Honma in 11:20. Tenzan beat Gedo with Anaconda Vice. DDT: Kenny Omega is headed to the promotion. He's scheduled to make his debut on 8/4 on the HARASHIMA-produced "Beer Garden Pro Wresling" event, and also work the Kota Ibushi-produced event 2 days later. He'll also work 8/31 at Korakuen. Omega had emailed DDT president Sanshiro Takagi recently about possibly working for DDT in the future, as he considers himself the uncrowned king of fighting outside of the ring. He also sent Takagi a couple of YouTube video links which featured him fighting by a riverside and in a kitchen. Yeah, DDT material alright.
Kota Ibushi participation in El Dorado yesterday: Brahman Shu beat Ibushi in 10:32. New Japan: Full cards for the G1 Climax shows have been revealed. Each card will consist of 6 tournament matches and 2 special tag matches. The 8/16 event at Ryogoku also features NEW IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Tag Team Champions Minoru & Prince Devitt defending against Jushin Liger & AKIRA, the team they just beat for the belts. Also featured on that day is Kurt Angle & Shinsuke Nakamura vs. Hiroshi Tanahashi & AJ Styles in a NJPW/TNA crossover match. PREMIUM: Jushin Liger is working his magic for the promotion. For the promotion's 8/30 event at Korakuen he's assembled 3 big matchups featuring top Jr. Heavyweight talent from all over Japan: Tiger Mask 4, El Samurai & Great Sasuke vs. Tokyo Gurentai (NOSAWA, MAZADA & TAKEMURA) Minoru, Mineo Fujita & GENTARO vs. Ikuto Hidaka, MIKAMI & Makoto Oishi Jushin Liger & Shuji Kondo vs. Tatsuhito Takaiwa & Magnitude Kishiwada NOAH: The 8th and final team for the NTV Cup Tournament will be Naomichi Marufuji & Kento Miyahara.
