CM Punk: breath of fresh air in today's WWE? |
|
I've pondered about talking this for quite some time, because of the amount of how much Punk has grown on me, and likely other IWCers alike. Since the beginning of his run in the WWE, he's been saddled with the complete set; in ring skills, marketability, charisma and so forth. I think the only reason most of us were skeptical of him getting to the top is because of WWE's track record with guys from the indies or lesser bases. Really, he's molded into his own, especially since beginning his heel run on SmackDown!.
I've been talking about it on the GDS boards a bit, and there's no doubt Punk has the most in-depth character in the WWE right now. In this day and age where the babyfaces are crippled with generic personalities, and even heels as well to a certain extent(most of the heel newcomers being the young cocky and arrogant type), CM Punk takes it to another level because he has different values and principles. Yeah, I'm talking about the straight-edge gimmick, because it's used as more than just.. a gimmick. His feuds - at least, so far - actually mean something, there is always a spin put into it, albeit I must admit it is a bit too early to judge. But if he continues like that, there's no telling what he'll be able to do. He single-handedly makes SmackDown! worth watching, well.. you could say Jericho too probably, but right now he isn't in any sort of concrete feud or angle, he's just messing around with Big Show. Along with how marketable he is, when he turns face again, or even staying as a long-term heel, this guy will be huge. He's clearly the frontrunner of the new wave of "next generation" of superstars WWE have in store. Some say Morrison, but all he has is momentum mostly, and some potential. No denying he has to work on his skills a bit and he could very well be on the same boat. ------------------- ![]() ![]()

Well put Hazard.
When Punk was a face i knew there was something about him but i wasn't too keen on him., But his performance as a heel has been very very great, the only other heel that can compare to him currently his Randy Orton who has developed his heel legend killer gimmick for the last few years and. Punks managed it in lot less then that. Morrison humm cant put my finger on it, he has star quality and a lot of potential, but hasn't really got a solid personality. He needs the young Shawn Michael's treatment, some great feuds and titles runs with the IC belt. ------------------- ![]() Credit 9-Martins-9

CM Punk is the perfect example of what the WWE needs right now: Character and an actual personality. If we stop to take an actual look at what makes him up, he takes different angle instead of generic arrogance, but more a combination of prideful, self-righteousness and judgemental.
Story and character are interconnected. You can't have a good story without good characters. For WWE to have a great cast, they will require much deeper and diverse characters. It's no different from when writing any other form of fiction or playing a part. Character is one of, if not from my perspective, the most important aspect of things alongside plot. They go hand in hand and I wish the WWE writers understood this. Still, CM Punk is a push in the right direction IF, if, they understand what works there. Sadly, I don't think they will as that's Punk's work and not their own that makes it shine. ------------------- ![]()

Completely agree that Punk is a 'breath of fresh air' in today's WWE since his heel turn. He's got far and away the best character of anyone on the roster right now, and has pretty good in ring skills to boot. Morrison certainly has the in ring skills (the flashiness, anyway) to be a major star, but I think he does need to work on his character and his mic work.

Punk and HBk could put on a good feud too if you think about it, if they let Shawn do what he does best and give his character more freedom.

I've only watched a very few of Punks indie matches/promos and knew he was a good sign by WWE, I'm glad he's a heel now as his character has really begun to shine.
He has everything going for him and I see him being in the top spot for a long time to come. WWE really needs to take note from him and have their new characters devolp more character and charisma. ------------------- ![]() Back To The Front, You Coward!, You Servant!, You Blindman!

I still remember when Punk was signed to the WWE and I had no idea who he was and I searched and watched some of his matches from RoH and watched some of his promos, that got me into liking him.
As a face in the WWE, he did get boring and stale, but as a heel, he's got personality and I just look forward to seeing him every Friday night to see what he does. He really is a breath of fresh air. WWE does need to look at Punk and see how great his personality is and do that with other wrestlers instead of giving them boring personalities. ------------------- ![]() "When you go astray, I'll be there to punch you back."

CM Punk was just another superstar for me before he turned heel, Punk as a face was too boring and obvious as him being straight edge and all, likes of Orton and Punk is what WWE needs.
Edit: Don't forget Dolph Ziggler. ------------------- ![]()

Dolph Ziggler's not that special a personality, IMO. He's just another arrogant, young superstar, he just has a catchphrase. I do think what they were possibly building with Maria and his relationship was a good idea until that just died out of no where.

So was Randy Orton when he started, Dolph could do more IMO. His title match with Rey was epic.

quote undertaker4everAnybody can do more, that's obvious. Possibilities exist all over. I'm not dissing his abilities as an athlete, I'm just saying his current character is not all that impressive. I find it hard to get behind someone being arrogant when that's basically every single young heel in the entire WWE. ------------------- ![]()

It's either the young arrogant heel or the happy go lucky baby face, He could end up like Charlie Haas, it all depends. He could go to TNA and come back then remain a mid-carder for the rest of his life and that would suck.
I don't like the way Drew McIntyre is being pushed compared to Dolph Ziggler. ------------------- ![]()
