Why do you watch wrestling? |
|
I was going to post in the Jeff Hardy thread but I figure this is a topic that could carry its own discussion.
Why do you watch wrestling? A lot of people harp on about technical wrestling and wrestling skill and all that. I used to be in the camp that thought technical wrestling was awesome. But after I started watching Mixed Martial Arts, I just can't stomach 'technical' wrestling anymore. Wrestling is nothing compared to MMA. There is no technical wrestler who could hold a candle to the likes of GSP or Fedor. There is no pro wrestler who can transition as fluidly between standing and ground skillsets like Fedor can, and these are guys who have time to script out and plan their matches unlike MMA fighters who fight on the fly. I'm sick of watching wrestlers slap on 'submissions' that are so obviously not painful, so obviously not cranked or locked in, and holding it for a good two minutes. I'm sick of watching people lay around for half the match. I'm sick of watching twenty minutes of restholds. I'm sick of transitions between moves that don't even make sense. So why do I watch wrestling? I watch it for the crazy shit that they can't do in MMA. Chair shots, jumping off ladders, luchador movesets, setting guys on fire, tag teams, TLC, the whole big ridiculous spectacle. What you call 'garbage' wrestling, I call entertainment. Don't get me wrong. I have a lot of respect for the wrestlers themselves, regardless of style, simply for the abuse they put their bodies through. They are athletes, through and through, and I won't deny that for a second. But don't try to sell me pro wrestling as a legitimate sport. It's not, it never will be, it will never hold a candle (as a real sport) to MMA. So embrace the spectacle. Go overboard with the crazy, outrageous shit. That is what wrestling has that MMA doesn't. So that's why I watch (or did, anyway. WWE's stepped back from the stuff I like). Why do you watch? If you're a big fan of technical wrestling, why do you like that when there is a legitimate alternative in MMA? ------------------- if you choose to pull the trigger should your drama prove sincere do it somewhere far away from here

I'm in exactly the same boat as you. I don't really care for the technical side of it because at the end of the day it's scripted, technical wrestling or not. Therefore, I too like the more extreme side of it and the extreme stroylines that are pretty rare these days.

Permission to destroy Spiritmafia and minimint SIR! Theres a couple people I'd like to see respond to this sillyness. SpiritMafia you said WWE can never hold a candle to a real sport (MMA)well MMA and WWE are completely different. Yes they have similarities such as incredible atheletes, all who train real damn hard to perfect their craft in an enviroment that is very much alike but the way its considered a "sport" is to add realism but we all know its not its entertainment. Though my personal opinion on the word sport being used in pro wrestling is the better you perform the better career you will receive. Just like in MMA if you put on an amazing fight but lose at the very end people will know youre damn good and give you just as good of a fight the next time around. So in that sense the better you become in the ring, on the mic, the more the company will like you and the more of a push you'll receive. quote SpiritmafiaWhat kind of MMA are you watching because fighters do that all the time too.. This is why alot of UFC fans act like butholes when it comes to pro wrestling its because they dont even want to try understand that its "Entertainment" they look at wrestlers as posers and are quick to bash the industry. When it comes to MMA fans and Pro Wrestling fans, I completely believe Pro Wrestling fans are far more open minded. Honestly Pro wrestling fans think they know everything about wrestling. MMA fans think their tough.. I guess its safe to say the majority is like that from what I've been part of. A pro wrestler wouldnt have an easy transition to MMA as an MMA fighter wouldnt have an easy transition to pro wrestling. Both take alot of skill and talent and time to perfect and both are very different because one is scripted and one is not. quote spiritmafiabecause MMA isnt WWE. We get more bang for our buck and we believe the wide variety of things that go on in wrestling is far more entertaining than MMA. If technical wrestling isnt your cup of tea than thats fine, you can bash pro wrestling all you want but you just have to remember they are both completely different. ------------------- ![]()

quote BILFYI'm not sure about SpiritMafia but that was exactly my point. If I want to watch a real fight I'll watch MMA whereas if I wanted to watch scripted entertainment, for entertainment purposes, I'll watch wrestling. At the end of the day wrestling is entertainment, there is no right and wrong to why you like it. Some people like the technical wrestling and "realism", some people don't.

There are many reasons I can go into reason why, aside from it's essentially what I want to do. Simple answer is I love wrestling. Aside from my personal reasons as to why I do, for itself I believe it's a unique and special, if often misunderstood and underappreciated, form of entertainment. The major problem I think you're arguement has is that MMA and Pro Wrestling are two different things. MMA is a sport. Wrestling is an art.
Now, in-ring quality wise, there is an art and style to that to that is entertaining when the craft is done correctly. Outside of the styles people use, it's less the "technical" aspect as more the approach to entertaining storytelling with matches alongside many other things that is truly missing with some wrestlers nowadays. Not everyone's fault, as I've stated before, right now is just more a down period of wrestling. Still, wrestling is entertainment. It's an artform. The promos, the characters, the stories, the matches, and so much more are all part of the overall performance. MMA is a sport. Wrestling is an art and entertainment. ------------------- ![]() Shine like the sun, flow a river See a chance to win, take it like a picture

1.) Entertainment.
2.) The spectacle of two guys (or girls) able to work together and rely on one another to keep one another safe and creating an artform. When done right it's seamless perfection and it's beyond comprehension for fans (like me) that don't have any training in the ring. 3.) The emotion, the brutality, the passion, and the struggle between the competitors to come out with the victory. 4.) Fighting spirit 5.) MOVEZ~! 6.) Jimmy Jacobs 7.) Tits ------------------- ![]()

re: Why do you watch wrestling? |
quote BILFYI realize they are completely different, and that is why my favourite part of pro wrestling is the stuff that you'd never see in MMA. The ridiculous weapons, the high flying, that sort of thing. The differences are awesome. However, when you get into the similarities, this is where it all falls apart for me. Take Kurt Angle, who for a while (I don't know if they still do this in TNA as I don't watch), but for a while they were all about how Kurt is this great and awesome legitimate athlete having legitimate sporting contests in the ring. Now, don't get me wrong, Angle is a brilliant athlete. He won a gold medal. He obviously has a lot of talent and dedication and I won't call that into question for a second. But he is not having legitimate sporting contests in that ring and everyone knows it. In my eyes it just seems stupid to promote your matches as these great exhibits of sport. Wrestling has so much in the way of ridiculous storylines, so build up the fact that it's two guys who hate each other. When Lance Storm and Kurt Angle are gonna have a match, you make it all about Canada vs. America and how these two guys are patriotic rivals, not that it will be a close match of athletic skill and you legitimately don't know who will win, you know? Not to mention that the second they put Angle in a shoot situation he was about 3 seconds from getting his arm broken, but I digress... quote BilfyThe difference here is that MMA fighters who get gassed easily and try to rest a lot are either a) mocked ruthleslly or b) knocked out or subbed by a more aware opponent. However, in WWE, you've got top guys like Orton and Cena who lie flat on the mat for minutes at a time to no detriment because they later magically recover and hit their finishers out of nowhere. quote BilfyThe difference here is that my complaint is the WWE moving AWAY from the Entertainment aspect. I think they need to embrace it more. WWE will never ever ever ever ever be confused with a real sport, so why do they keep trying to achieve legitimacy among real sports? They have something that nobody else has! They have spectacle and storytelling and this big, bombastic, ridiculous show! And yet Kane and the Undertaker are the only relics of the golden age of wrestling, when there were so many ridiculous characters. WWE is marketing themselves to kids, so why are all the wrestlers just guys who want to beat up other guys? Where are the vampires and the cowboys and the weird crossdressers? Nobody could pull that off in MMA, and yet WWE (and TNA?) are failing to capitalize on one of their biggest advantages vs. MMA. quote BilfyExactly. But WWE seems happy to market most of their roster as 'guys in tights who fight'. Wrestlers are not MMA fighters! So why try to occupy the same space in a viewer's mind? quote BilfyThe variety and the difference is exactly my point. WWE at least (dunno about TNA, again, haven't watched it in years) is failing to utilize the strengths of pro wrestling to market themselves. The roster is full of completely generic men in tights who pretend to have a legitimate athletic contest against one another. But we all know it's scripted. We all know they can plan beforehand. So why are so many of their matches the same old boring thing? Wrestling can be ANYTHING, and yet WWE still seems to want us to think of their wrestlers as being as tough and skilled as MMA fighters. Ok, they ARE tough and skilled, but they aren't being GnP'd by Fedor or knocked out by Anderson Silva. It's not the same. So WWE shouldn't keep trying to make it the same. I long for the days of the Attitude era not because the wrestling was better but because there was so much more style and character. That's the kind of stuff that keeps me watching wrestling. Not Randy Orton napping on the canvas (and not as a metaphor for being knocked out). ------------------- if you choose to pull the trigger should your drama prove sincere do it somewhere far away from here

re: Why do you watch wrestling? |

There is the little thing known as "kayfabe." Wrestling has the illusion of reality, if people went running out there like "Wink wink, it's acting" then that would ruin some of the aspects of it. The idea is to let loose and just let yourself get caught up in things, something I find to be one of smarks problems really.
Watch puroresu, for an example. While it's staged as well, they treat it with seriousness and legitimacy that helps get it across. Of course, it's just a show. Still, the elements itself have to be presented in a way that's believable. The idea is to blend the lines. From what you're suggesting, it would become far more comical and cartoonish like in the 80's, which is not what it needs right now. I like to think of it similar to evolution of comic books, really. It started out cartoony in stuff like the Silver Age and over time, it's matured into product we have today. Now, right now I also feel comics are tripping over themselves here and there, which can be said the same for wrestling. We just need people at moment who understand the aspect of being a showmen while also being a performer in-ring cause both sides are 1 whole to the same coin. One element should not exist without the other. They can, but it's just not as good. One reason someone like Kurt Angle, HBK, or Undertaker can stand on top is that they are the blur of that line. Basically, you have to treat product with respect of marketing as serious, but at the same time, to maximize sport's entertainment aspect, you must have your colorful showmen and storylines. Essentially the business just needs to evolve a bit in maturity of writers and characters alongside some as in-ring performers if they wish to be on top again. Afterall, while I laughed at this right here, I rather this not end up the future of wrestling: ------------------- ![]() Shine like the sun, flow a river See a chance to win, take it like a picture

re: Why do you watch wrestling? |
quote Cattle MutilationI fixed it for you, CM, now it makes more sense. I agree with it, and that's all that matters. But yeah, I watch wrestling primarily for the entertainment. Some gimmicks and storylines are pretty hilarious, others take a more dramatic approach and work out. I mean, so many years ago, I didn't know or care about any of that, I was just watching with my parents, seeing Hulk Hogan in action. Wasn't until the feud between HBK and Bret Hart began that really drew me in...picking a side and rooting for him to this very day. Some moves are pretty damn cool. How many people do you know can do a standing moonsault? Whenever the superstars/wrestlers in the ring have the right chemistry, it's bound to be a candidate for match of the night, or even match of the year. Whilst WWE doesn't alwayd deliver in this category, they still bring in the excitement and such. Do like RoH for the really crazy stunts and action, though. -------------------
