For the game.....yeah, it gave you ALOT of advantages..and it was just cool to have happen..something different from the last games
For the story....that's what the Strogg do, they test you to see if they can use your body for soldiers...if they can't they just grind you up for food

Because they capture marines such as yourself, and turn you into one of their own to fight on their own side, hence not long after this happening you fight more 'human' like enemies.
Story line wise i guess it was a way to allow you to get into certain areas because you are now one of them etc etc.
