Unfortunately game developers are favoring the vertical split because they expect you to have a widescreen tv.
Once reality kicks in, one should realize that the mass majority of gamers out there have analog tube televisions.
The widescreen TV would give you enough space for the vertical split to make the most sense, but on an tube tv, the display is way too narrow to effectively play as you would with some freaking peripheral vision. It takes a lot of getting used to, especially since the camera angle isn't first person, and the third person camera is centered much to the right of the character, making the left side a total blind spot, like Resident Evil 4 and 5.
You can sometimes get around this by using cover, so the camera moves to the left and right, depending on where you lean.
All split screen games should have a selector for vertical or horizontal splits. Seriously.
