This something that someone from school brought up awhile back. He reckons that for something to be retro, it has to be from at least 2 generation ago. So according to him, with the next generation, the GameCube will be considered retro, which I find impossible.

I say that retro times ended by the end of the Super Nintendo's life span. That was when most developers stopped caring about creativity, and went for realism.

So what do you think? When does the retro age of video games end for you?

id say it would be N64 and below generation consles

The N64 is sort of phasing into the retro era at this point. The less people on the site that have played Ocarina of Time, the more retro it becomes.

However another part of me recognizes that the SNES/Genesis (Master System for you brits) is probably the last console that can be called retro. Nintendo still uses N64 quality graphics for the DS, and the games are still sought after, so the quality and the games themselves are still playable and useable.

What defines "retro" though?

I think of the N64 as a retro console. But for some reason I don't really consider Playstation to be retro even though it's from the same time period.

Same here, but I'd say the N64 borders on retro. I grew up with an N64,but I still think it's somewhat retro.

I think midway through the N64 era was when everything stopped being retro.

I would say in maybe two more console generations the Gamecube would be considered retro.

It really depends on which system you grew up with. If you grew up with an N64, you won't say its retro, but if you grew up with a GCN you would say the N64 is retro.

SO yeah, there isnt a real answer.

I grew up with the SNES but there's no way in hell I would say it's not retro.
