So, it doesn't crash, it just goes black?

If you are running Vista, make sure you have both the latest official patch and the latest UNOFFICIAL Patch installed. The steam version of the game is already patched and you only need to install the the unofficial patch. The retail and digital distribution copies require you to install both the 1.2 official patch and the latest unofficial patch (see planetvampire.com). The unofficial patch fixes some vista issues.

Failing that, try appending "-dxlevel 70" to the shortcut that starts the game. This forces older DirectX 7 graphics, which helps rule out graphics card issues.

Failing that, make sure you dont have any version of Python installed on your computer. (It can conflict with the game).

The game has known issues on computers with more than 3.5 Gigs of Ram. You can make it work on a 64 bit OS, but you have to install a secondary patch that is included with the unofficial path.
