Which will you be first? And what will the differences be?
I assume as an officer your Lord will by troops for you and train you if he wants. Hopefully you can defect and other cool things too! But what about Vagrants? I assume you just run around and fight who you want? And do you think you can get troops as a Vagrant?

Vagrant: Run around, make friends, do missions, get married. Ruler: Lead armies, choose policies, unite the land. Officer: Rise the ranks, get married, swear oaths, do missions, help unite the land.
Ultimately, I would be an officer.

I just got the game last week, and played as all there... personally my favourite is Officer. Vagrant is no better than Officer, since it's the same thing except the max resources/actions will always be 1.
Rulers are just utter rubbish. Okay you have the cards aspect of it, but just have Calm of the Seas and you can attack any and all enemies one after another and finish in no time... (I know I did).
Officers on the other hand, you have assignments, which you can hand pick so if you want to finish quickly, just select to attack, otherwise just pick assignments in far away places, and you'll just carry them out and not attack anyone.
In the mean time you can also do Mercenary missions which was incredibly fun as well depending on the mission (some did get repetitive). That said, doing them unlocked things, so it was really a win win.
So Officer all the way for me... personally I quite enjoyed this game... as far as online is concerned, I absolutely HATE Online gameplay in any games, so I'm happy with them not having it in this game. You can either focus on online or single player gameplay, and I prefer SP.

Actually, there is a way to take a few pieces of land from a ruler at one time. what you do is get to the area the ruler is stationed in. got to battle and capture him at the end, it's a bit tricky and doesn't always work but that is how it's done. I was told it had somethign to do with the little platform in the center of the base and hearing a gong noise. I've heard it a few times but still hasn't always worked.

I usually be a vagrant then when a ruler has taken most of the land I join him and work my way up the ranks near the end of the game

That's what I was thinking! You don't play as a ruler, you play as a CaW officer/vagrant, and if a player quits they are simply gone.
until some kind of giant powerful server was set up, online battles would likely be restricted to single battles, as an online empire mode would require either the players stay on till the game is won or lost, or tons of data, ie: progress of all forces, which officers are on which force, weapon data and all such things to be saved, also so, what if all the persons involved arnt online again for a long time? u cant play with out all the ppl, like how would it be handled if ur land got attacked while ur not online to defend it?? koei probably gets a headache just thinking of an online empire mode, lol
Civalization Revolution did this perfectly. I dont see why Koei cant. And what would happen if someone quit, they fell off the map. nothing left. Koei could easily do it.

i've been lurking on other forums and by what i have read the ruler mode is stupid. i think officer mode is best because you get to do the mercenary missions + assignment missions. why be vagrant when you can get paid as an officer + rank up and get more actions to do more missions + get more choices for missions?

Lunchbox is on topic! *high five*
I prefer to be an officer till level 10 atleast cause even on easy, when your brand new and a vagrant and try to overthrow you will likely die in the first 2 minutes.
