The Terrible Shotgun is named well, it has TERRIBLE accuracy. It may have a high DMG stat, but half the time it won't hit what you aim at.
DO NOT KILL SMILING JACK. HE'S THE BEST SOURCE OF AMMUNITION IN THE WASTES.
It's very beneficial to go back to him every 2-4 days to buy his ammunition, he has an ass load of it. Again, there's a Super Mutant Behemoth out the front of the building he's in (Evergreen Mills) so you may want to stack up on ammo or a few Mini-Nukes.

Weapons you should get right this second;
Ol' Painless - Unique Hunting Rifle. Found in the North East corner of the map in The Republic of Dave. You can mess around with the ballots, causing Dave to get voted out and he'll leave and give you the key to his safe, where Ol' Painless is. Or you could just kill everyone and take it.
Ol' Painless has a DMG stat of 30 when at 100% condition. It uses .32 Calibre rounds just like Hunting Rifles.
Lincoln's Repeater - Another unique. It has no basic counterpart and can be repaired with Hunting Rifles.
Found in the Museum of History (in D.C. You can simply run there from the Metro and ignore all the Super Mutants) in the Offices in the big room with all the work stalls in it at the top of a small flight of stairs (you're basically walking up onto a mezzanine level). The Repeater is in a display case which is a little taller than waist height on the left wall towards the back of the room, while standing at the top of the stairs. The place is populated with Feral Gouls, so they shouldn't be too much trouble. Watch out for the Glowing One at higher levels though.
The Repeater has a DMG stat of 50 when at 100% condition. It uses .44 Magnum Rounds, which are a little harder to come by, which is why I only use the Repeater for bigger/stronger enemies.
Grouped with Commando, Sniper and Concentrated Fire and a 100 Small Guns stat, you'll be invincible if you use V.A.T.S regularly. The fact that both guns have a 0.0 Spread, which means that, where you aim normally (outside V.A.T.S) the bullet will hit 100% of the time, where 95% of other guns in FALLOUT 3 have a Spread of 0.5 or higher, means that if you do decide to use them outside V.A.T.S they're dependable.
EDIT: Ohh, if you'd like to know more about the Xuanlong Chinese Assault Rifle, the Unique Chinese Assault Rifle, just ask.
