You can only save when you finish a section of the game.

Example: I finished arcade mode and won as Betsy, the game prompted me to save, why? becayse it unlocked secret character 2 "Psylocke" and by saving I can now play her any time i log on.

Diff between betsy and psy? Betsy is the Extreme Emen costume and Psy is the Revanche costume, with different moves.
