Just stand over a kit and press G to use it. Very useful. Especially when you're a scout and you see a tank rolling in, just headshot a anti-tank enemy or one of your allies (j/k) and blast away.

If by 'things' you mean the Barrat .50 Sniper then you pick it up by pressing 'G' I do believe.
