No sound after plane crash scene:

The only way to fix this that I know of is to run the game in WinXP SP2 Compatibility Mode. To do this, right-click on the shortcut on the desktop and go to the compatibility tab. Make sure the box that says "Run this program in compatibility mode for:" is checked and select Windows XP (Service Pack 2).

I'm hoping to make this thread a repository of things people should try in order to fix any errors they may have with the game. If you have any solutions, feel free to post them here, no matter how small the issue may be. If you still need help after trying these fixes, make your own thread and we'll see what can be done from there.

After the plane crash, all you can see is black with white squares or pixels floating around:

Your video card doesn't support Shader Model 3.0 and can't run Bioshock correctly. There is an unofficial patch to make Bioshock work with SM2.0 video cards, but it's a work-in-progress and may not be very stable. However, the results so far have been pretty good. See http://www.shadershock.tk for more information.

Game crashes inexplicably either randomly or when transitioning to another area:

  • Try adding -dx9 to the shortcut path. To do this, right-click on Bioshock's desktop shortcut, and then in the box where the file is located, add a space at the end and type -dx9.
  • Turn off EAX and High Detail Shaders

General crashes using GeForce 8 Series cards:
