You need 15 stars to find him, he is yellow, and you can use some glitches and complete the game with 16 stars.

It sure sounds like Yoshi, but in most games I've played that have Yoshi, he's green, not red. But it definitely sounds like Yoshi.

Yoshi can be ANY COLOR. Haven't you played Yoshi's Island or even Super Mario: Sunshine? Just because he's green in this game doesn't mean he's green in every game...
Seeing as it has to be Yoshi, I'd say he won that easy.
