Subject: Errors in Vista

I am trying to run this game on Windows Vista. Usually when I try to run the game, it immediately crashes and tells me that the 'Engine' has stopped working.
I downloaded SwiftShader, which I saw recommended on another site, and it worked a couple of times. Now though, when I choose 'load game', it crashes and says the same thing.
I've tried altering the Config settings, downloading a patch from moddb.com, restarting, changed the compatibility settings and there's no difference. It still doesn't work and keeps giving the same error - 'Engine has stopped working'.
Does anyone know if this is just a problem with Vista? I bought the game from Amazon, and it said on there that it was compatible with Vista, but it doesn't say that on the box.
