I've basically become fed up with the PAL delays of major titles, (SSBB in particular), and have decided to buy myself a Freeloader so that I can FINALLY enjoy Brawl. I'm supposed to receive both the Freeloader and Brawl later on in the week, but I'm slightly concerned about the 'Cannot read disk' errors that a minority of Smashers have come across already. From what I understand, since Brawl is a duel-layer high-density disk, a small number of lenses are unable to read them due to dust build up.

Is there any way of detecting whether or not the lens is dirty before I get my hopes up when my precious game arrives? Even if it is dysfunctional, is there any way for an AUSTRALIAN to get it repaired? As far as I know, only Nintendo of America were offering free Wii repairs.

Thanks in advance.

I wouldn't worry too much. As long as your Wii isn't in a dusty area, chances of Brawl not working are very low. There is absolutely no way to detect whether or not the game will work without the actual disk, though. If it doesn't, try blowing into the disk drive (hey, it worked when I suggested that to Vito!). If that doesn't work, there are DVDs you can buy that contain small brushes to dust off the lens. Those are tailored for DVD players, so they won't run for very long in the Wii (since it stops reading after it realizes that it can't), but a few goes with that should clean off any dust on your lens.

Anyway, it should work, and there are solutions if it doesn't, so don't worry. I certainly don't blame you for importing Brawl, the fact that they don't even have a release date for PAL regions is ridiculous.

It was kept in the corner of my room until recently and I reckon it was exposed to a bit too much dust for my liking, hence my concern. I am probably worrying a bit too much, but I just don't know how much dust exposure it'd take to damage the lens.

Well in any case, I'll just wait until it arrives then seek out help if the worst should happen. Thanks for your help.

I heard that the new update blocks the usage of the freeloader. so if your going to buy brawl from the U.S or any other region for that matter. then dont update your wii.

Sorry for bumping the thread, but I have some more questions.

Firstly, I finally got my copy of Brawl. Yay. But just my luck, it doesn't work. The game loads on the disk channel, but when I select it the screen just goes black and doesn't load.

Is this because of a dirty lens, or is my Wii in need of an update? And, if it does need an update, will it block my Freeloader?

Thanks.

I'm pretty sure that the new update blocks the freeloader, I'm not %100 sure though.

Some Wiis that were sold at launch don't play the game, as it is a dual layered disc.

Try taking the disc out and blowing gently into the disc slot.

I've tried that a few times already... The Wii doesn't say anything about not being able to read the disk

I don't think that launch Wiis are the problem because all of my friends have launch Wiis and we play Brawl just fine. I think its just that people who have launch Wiis have had them longer than anyone else so there are more opportunities for them to get dusty.

Also, when you first put Brawl in your Wii, it should check to make sure you have the most recent update. If you don't, it will try to update for you and won't play until you have it. However, that update is for American Wiis so the transition to a PAL Wii might be causing trouble with the update. If Brawl requires that you update to the version that blocks the freeloader, then your in a sticky wicket.

That's what my initial fear was, hence Why I was reluctant to update my Wii. So I asked around and after a while I just updated it and now everything's all fine and dandy. (Hope that answers your question as well, Andrew5 )

Thanks for all your help, everyone
