I am trying to get the level select cheat code to work. I have tried the UP UP DOWN DOWN LEFT RIGHT LEFT RIGHT combo during the menu and during the game to no avail. Anyone have any pointers as to when exactly to apply the cheat?

You need to do it at the main title screen.
