First of all, do NOT delete gimme.dll. It is a memory manager and getting rid of it will cause more problems than it fixes. Also, don't change your swap file size, since that might break other apps, and it's a real pain, anyway. What you really need to do is tell Win2K or WinXP to manage memory like Win98.
1) Download the Microsoft Application Compatibility Tool. Go to
http://www.microsoft.com/compatibility or directy to the link:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=09DAC794-B803-4B92-83C9-6A9E8B8014342) Install ACT.
3) Load up the Compatibility Administration Tool from the Programs menu.
4) Click the "Fix" icon to create a new compatibility fix.
5) Type in a description (anything you want), and then point the program to the "Porsche.exe" file. Click "Next".
6) Under "Operating System Modes", select "Windows 2000". "Win98/Me" might also work, but I haven't needed to try it. Click "Next".
7) Out of the 130-or-so compatibility options, enable "EmulateHeap" and "HeapPadAllocation". Click "Next".
8) This should bring you to the end of the wizard. Click "Finish".
9) Now you'll have an application compatibility patch. However, ACT will discard your new patch unless you install it into the system registry. To do this, go to the "File" menu and click "Install".
10) Every time you run Porsche.exe, it should now manage memory correctly. You will now also be able to download the 3.5 patch from within the game itself, and have full multiplayer capabilities. Enjoy!

I tried everything listed in this thread and all I get is the splash screen and then nothing? Did I do something wrong?

Probably. If it locks up on the splash screen, that means it's trying to allocate as much memory as possible. That means the Win98 Heap emulator isn't working.
Remember, after creating a compatibility patch, you have to insert it into the registry. You can uninstall patches in "Add/Remove Programs"

I think so, but only my dad has XP. Maybe I'll test it out sometime.
XP is evil. I won't have it on *MY* computer!

I used to have that problem a lot before the 3.5 patch came out. The game was constantly trashing my saved games! Since I put on the 3.5 patch I haven't had the problem. Try backing up then deleting all your saved game files, create a new driver, then copy back your old saved games. One (or more) of your saves might be corrupted, and that crashes the whole game.

I just find bits and pieces here and there. Besides, I'm an ex-Amiga user. Figuring out how to get A500 games running on the Amiga 1200 was a real test of hackerdom.

I refuse to upgrade to XP, so I really have to scour the Internet looking for Win2K compatibility tips. www.NTCompatible.com is a great site for that.
Oh, and Win98 mode in XP really sucks compared to what you can do with the Microsoft ACT tool. I'll see if I can make a generic patch for people to download. Making your own ACT patch is a pain.

OK, I made my Win2k/XP patch.
I also have the unofficial 3.5 patch and Save Game Fixer. Both of these files were originally from NFSCheats.com
http://www.ninechime.com/Junk/pu/If you have problems installing the patch, e-mail me. You might have to install a Windows service pack before the patch works, but it should be fine.

I can not select any songs to play. I go to Options and then Audio but I do not see any music or songs under the playlist. Can someone tell me the name of the files needed and possibly where I can get them downloaded, please?

Hi there! I use to play NFS Porsche Unleashed on my 98 & ME workstations, but on XP it still doesn't work. I mean, I can start the game, but it runs very slow. And this XP patch doesn't fix that. Please help?

When I install your patch it only makes it worse.
When I try and startup the game from my desktop icon it wont even start at all it just does like a false start, when I unistall your patch it stats but stalls when I try to enter a race

YOur patch created by the Microsoft ACT tool does'nt work. The game still slows down Waccoon. And there's no way i'm goin to go into my bios and slow down my clock speed. To tell with NFS PU. I'll wait for other car games.
