There are no real cheats for this game, I'm afraid.
My best advice is to eat a lot of food to build your health, and if you get stuck, replay levels until you level enough to take on the stronger enemies!

If you get stuck with Gwen, chances are that you will get stuck with just about every other characters in the game later.
Eat more to build up your characters. That's the only way.
