I'm just wondering - how the hell are you meant to pronounce deus ex? Is it like "da-os" ex or "dyuce" ex or what?

day-us-ex

And it means "God from " in latin.

It's taken from the sentence "Deus ex machina", (God from the machine)

The guy at the shop says "Deuce Ex". He didn't know what I was asking about when I said "Day-us Ex". Ah well.

LOL. Just proved that you don't absolutely NEED to be clever to become a shop assistant...

Are you sure it's supposed to be in Latin?

Hey I pronounced it "Deuce Ex" too!

Of course I'm sure it's latin!

"Deus" is latin for "god", and "ex" is "out of".

"Deus ex machina" means "god from the machine"
Which kinda makes sense, considering that in one ending, my favorite,

SPOILERIFIC!

JC melds with helios, and becomes a godlike being! Therefore, a god has been made from the machine (Ok, OK... cyborg...)

lol also if you check the cd case of the first one it explains the same thing. comes from deus ex machina which means god from the machine. also why the poison stuff in #1 was named ambrosia for nector of the gods.

I wonder why they used that quote though, considering that the "true" ending used as the background for Deus Ex 2 does NOT seem to be the one where JC becomes a god...
(Or is it?)

a deus ex machina is, when the author of a play or book or similar invents a device, or character or something, at a point in the story, when he needs to solve a plot.
for instance, a "cliffhanger" in movies or series is usually solved in that way.
like the friend, who borrowed a helicopter to pick the main character and his bride out of the car in mid air.

Correct, although the original usuage of the phrase was to describe a bloke being lowered onto the stage by a crane in Roman plays, to imitate a god.

deus ex machina means "the machine from god"(in latin a noun is placed at the end of a phrase, after its atributes), which in the bible refers to human beings, simply.(sorry for my english)
