is there a way to run without the attack item? i tried to find it on tutorials but i can only get beginner and hands on, why, it looks like there may be more?

Sort of. The extreme gear "Shinobi" lets you run.... on air.

Sonic with the Chaos Emerald board can take the running shortcuts without the powerup, you just need to have 0 rings.
