She's a girl.
In the original Japanese legends she's a girl and Issun refers to her as a girl several times in the game.
I also think it's printed in the manual.

I took a wihle to relise what gender it is, eventually figured it out, I think it say it right in the start of the game.

well according to the mytologi amateratsu is the sun, is male (sorry if i went wrong) he is called mother of us all, due that well without the ligth that amateratsu brings it wont be any life, aslo some character refer him as a wolf, not a female wolf and others as a doggie.

When you meet a ghost character in the game, he calls Ameterasu a "beautiful maiden." I don't know if that means Ammy's inner personality is a beautiful maiden, or if Ammy's a girl... but I think she's a girl.

I seem to remember reading somewhere that Amaterasu is genderless. But I'm not too sure.

Amaterasu is a god and therefore genderless. However like most deities tend to have qualities of a certain gender, Ammy is referred to as female.

Women in clever disguises. Ammy doesn't wear clothing so its all about attitude for the dominant male gamer base. After the whole water dragon thing, and you are talking to Rao, she says that Ammy's a slow swimmer. Issun then says to stop it coz Ammy is sensitve about HER flaws.
So Ammys a girl. Da da!!!

Some people think the wolf statue Amaterasu is possessing is a boy (or at least genderless) but her real form is a goddess.

I remember I started playing the game and I was wondering the same exact thing. xD But throughout the game they refer to her as a girl several times so I eventually got it.
