As it was said above, he strangled it so that it wouldn't have to suffer.
That and it was probably going to wake up and attack him.

Yeah i missed the whole part with the mutant dogs because i had to walk out of the theatere for a second and i come back and my sisters crying, and i look up and hes holding the dog while its trying to bite him, then strangling him.

Its too much of a tear jerker not to kill it off.

hear are the list of films the last man on earth omegan man i am omega wich sucks and i am legend there is only one book called i am legend witch started all of the films and yes there is a dog in the book but u dont get really atacthed to the dog in the book yes there is a dog also that dies in last man on earth but no not in omega man or i am omega and yes of coures as u know ther is a dog in i am legend the dog was infected so he had to strangle him tho ti was sad because ehte dog was cool and the dog was the only freind he ahd left in the wrold =[ sad yes but the pont of the movie is he becomes a leend to man kind but nto the same as in the book but u need to read the book if u want to know
