Because it was two different companies. Sony and Toshiba. They attempted several times to come to an agreement. But in the end they decided to go seperate ways.

You know, every time I see this question asked, I always think of the other question thats quite similar to this one, "Cake or Pie?"

One person didnt wake up one morning and decide to make blu-ray and HD-DVD. Two different companies have been developing and creating the formats.
Its just like the VHS and Beta war back when VHS came out. two different formats that do similar things that came out at the same time.

According to a Sony "suit" that "wishes he were involved" it was a "matter of saving face". They could not come to an agreement because of stupid pride. Considering that Toshiba (along with others) developed the Cell processor, it's sad it came to this. They were initially on the same page but who knows? This may have worked out to our (the consumer) best interest.

It seems that Blu-Ray has got one step closer to winning.

yes! I win the wager against my friend that Blu-ray will conquer in a few months after the last announcement

Time to collect my money I think

So does that leave Microsoft on their lonesome supporting HD-DVD or are Paramount still with them?
wow sucks to be a 360 owner

shadowj, Toshiba were the ones making HD-DVD. If they pull out, then thats over for HD-DVD. Microsoft and paramount can still support it, but they wont be supporting much of anything now since toshiba wont be making it any more.
and how does it suck to be a 360 owner? Its not like HD-DVD was required for it or anything. It sucks to be a HD-DVD owner though.

Actually, shadow, it sucks to be a 360 owner who bought the HD-DVD attachment. Yes, Microsoft has shown their approval for the HD-DVD but only through an add-on. This would ensure that, if the HD-DVD failed, it would not backfire on Microsoft because it's not integrated in to the console (like the PS3).
I did not buy the attachment. I never bought anything HD until a winner came out (plus the price would drop as well). So now I'm hoping Microsoft will make a Blu-Ray player attachment for the 360. But seeing how this race is still technically going, that may be awhile.

Same here. I'm glad I waited. I'm probably going to be picking up a PS3 soon now.

I'm just glad I picked the winning format. Now if I could turn some of this luck into a winning lottery ticket we'd really have something.
