Rockstar Games have jumped at the possibility of a GTA 5 by the end of 2011. Do you think they should go along with this or not?

Queue lengthy discussion about the significance of the name "GTA V". Lets clear this up here: obviously it means the next GTA game, called V for lack of a better name. It couldn't possibly be what IV was for III, a complete revamp, as the tech just hasn't improved. What's more, it'd be ditching all the groundwork laid down with RAGE and Euphoria. Okay? Okay.
I think the next GTA by 2011 is a definite possibility, and almost an expectation. VC came only a year after GTA III, and SA, which was much more substantial, was only two years after that. VC and III were similar, and I think that relationship is now emulated by IV and expansion packs, rather than a game being released within 12 months. With the second expansion coming out this year, it's acceptable to expect the new game two years after that.
Sure, modern games may take longer to make, but DLC doesn't, so they should be working on it already.

I remember going to a site that said GTA V will be released sometime in 2014. 2011 sounds more realistic though, I doubt it'll take R* six years to make a game. Unless they're making another epic one like GTAIV.

Yea cause waiting for 4 years to make GTA4 isn't realistic.
At any rate, I don't know if a new GTA disc game will come out by then. They're so apparent into pushing downloadable content where It's cheaper for them to do as well as gain more money. The only thing I can see being a new is bringing out all the DLC and possibly putting them on discs. But, who knows. It's too earlier to speculate on the next GTA game imo. I mean sure back in SA days it was done after people finished but still...

If it's going to take them that long, they shouldn't be doing it. They should take an approach that's less time consuming

Ville, R* seems more intent to make GTA bigger and badder each time. If it does take longer, this would fit into housers words for that which I touched on with one of my threads about DVD-9 is a concern for the future on 360.

Yeah but they also consider relevant issues. They aren't like Polyphony Digital, who make a big polished game at the expense of time. Every GTA game so far has come at the right time. They aren't about to spend 6 years making a single game.

I think the next GTA game will be simply another game using the GTA IV engine, rather than GTA V, just like how games like Vice City and San Andreas used the GTA III engine. Besides, at first, they probably also gave the name GTA IV to Vice City.

I hope it's an expansion of the GTA IV engine in a different city. They can't coast off Liberty City forever, can they? Maybe they'll go for Vice City. I just hope they can release these expansions of GTA IV on the PS3 somehow.

I'd love to play them, I loved GTA IV.

I don't see GTA V coming out any time soon. I believe that this generation of consoles will see expansion packs, DLC, and new disc based episodes based on the GTA IV engine. When the NEXT gen of consoles is released, we will have GTA V. Until then we will get prequels/sequels that are analogous to the Vice City and San Andreas of this generation.

GTA V is just a codename for the next official GTA.

Not really, and if it is, it's pretty dumb. Anyone who has been a long time fan of the series knows that GTA V is neither the next game or a code name. Most people here are calling it GTA: Next, which is something I started a while back.

Uh, why not? They can churn out DLC expansions left and right for those 6 years, which not only costs less to produce but they gain more money cause the dlc games won't be pre-owned and it actually stops that issue.
Then they release the next(GTA5 lets say for the sake of debate)game that has a different engine and physics and do the same thing. So, basically you have one disc based game with like 6 or 7 episodes per gen. I should also add they'll probably add the DLC to disc medium for those who cannot purchase online titles and experience it that way. While my opinion is different, there's no denying the DLC for R* and MS has sold extremely well for them to continue milking the engine that way. It's better for the company to do this. This is what DLC is supposed to be and not rip offs like a new skin for $5, or 3 cars, 3 weapons and 10 radio stations lets say for $10. Last one is just a random example. But yea, 20 dollars or 1600 MS points for a 1/3rd of missions of a regular GTA disc game with some new stuff is not bad considering new games cost 60 dollars and some games don't even have anywhere near the amount of missions or replayability like GTA.
^ Right there it's a gold mine and like chiro, I do not expect a NEW GTA disc game anytime this generation. When PS4 releases in 3 years or something, then I can see GTA5 release and them continue the cycle. This generation isn't like last gen with PS2. They have availability of giving us Downloadable content with missions, new story characters..etc to milk the engine and it being cheaper for them to produce and use the other money slowly for the next generation.
As Chiro said previous: If this was available last gen, Vice City and San Andreas probably would have had DLC released for it.

Final, I never said I don't expect a full disc version of GTA in the coming few years of this generation. What I said was that I DO NOT expect GTA V, the full SEQUEL to GTA IV.
