Half Life 2 loads fine and I'll be in deathmatch and then all of a sudden it exits out and I get this message:

"Failed to lock vertex buffer in cmesh DX8::LockVertexBuffer"

After doing my personal research I came across no solution. Most people are saying that there is no solution which is just awesome. If anyone knows anything about this problem please let me know.

Computer Specs:
Inspiron E1505
1.86 ghz duel core processor
1 gb ddr2 ram
Nvidea 7200 256mb video card
Win XP
Direct X 9

Looks like a DirectX problem. Have you installed the lastest nVidia drivers and newest version of DX?

Yeah... it seems like it should be a direct x problem but it's talking about dx8 and i have dx9c. after doing research the only "solution" that i've come across says:

I realised that if I del file ..\valve\steamApps\myUser\counter-strike source\bin\vidcfg.bin then I could play again. Then I made a file.bat whit the next instruccions:
del "C:\File Programs\Valve\Steam\ SteamApps\myUser\counter-strike source\bin\vidcfg.bin";
"C:\File Programs\Valve\Steam\Steam.exe" -applaunch 240;

Then I execute this .bat and I can play CS:S!!

I just don't understand what he means.

Well I just got this error, too.

I was playing CS:S last night and for weeks with no problem, then I boot up this morning, play for 5 minutes and BOOM. Happens every time, I've restarted the PC, everything.

Other mods run no problem.

I have actually seen that once or twice before. Funny, because I was on an Nvidia card when it happened, too. Must be an Nvidia thing.

It's not an Nvidia card thing, since I've just started getting that same message and I've got an ATI Radeon X800 XL card. I really wish Valve would get off their lazy asses and figure out how to fix this growingly serious problem.

WARNING This user isn't as smart as he looks....

Running my computer with an Nvidia 7300GT with 3 day old drivers, 2 gigs of ram, 2.2 ghz processor, tried your ideas and it did absolutely no good.

This problem has been around for 3 years, Valve has no idea what to do. Apparently they're too "busy" to make an unlocking file for the vertex buffers or post an answer to any of us, in fact the emails I sent to them NEVER get replies back. I even tried contacting Nvidia and they said it probably was a fault made by steam which makes it incompatibie with advanced systems. I.E. if your comp has enough you play HL2 with like 60+ FPS it will actually crash the game.... Out of spite....
