Sony Pictures will adapt the popular PlayStation 2 title "Shadow of the Colossus" into a big screen action film, with Justin Marks writing the screenplay and Kevin Misher in negotiations to produce, says Variety.

"Colossus," which was released exclusively on the PlayStation 2 in 2005, revolves around a man named Wander who must travel across a cursed wasteland and defeat 16 creatures, known as the colossi, in order to restore the life of a girl.

The project, which proved a big seller for PlayStation and was produced internally by Sony Computer Entertainment, will build upon the video game's fantasy setting of a solitary world with few characters other than the 16 enemies.
I really can't believe they would do this

I don't believe it

Besides...The game is all about the emotional journey of the player...Hours and hours of lonely riding through the empty wilderness...The ambience of solitude and the feeling that gives you...How the hell can you represent that in a film...A cinema full of people watching a boy and his horse for 3 hours isn't going to appeal to the mass market...Even the game wasn't a mass market thing...And then when you lose your only friend before the final battle...There's real emotion there...I don't think you can possibly reflect that in a film...I really can't see how on Earth this would work if I'm honest...But we'll see...

I don't know how they would get this right And Justin Marks? The guy who wrote the Street Fighter movie? One can only hope he doesn't turn this into a major cheese-fest then.

I'm all for this movie if they can get a good director but even so, I don't know how they will adapt this to the big screen. The reason the game works so well is because of the lonliness and the fact that Wanda and Agro are totally alone in the vast land, sharing it only with the Colossi. I don't know how they would get that right and have it appeal to wide audiences.

I'll be keeping my eye on this for more news for sure.

I wonder if they will speak gibberish in this film, like they do in the game?
And if it is anything like the game, the script wouldn't even be that big.
Unless it's something like a Lone travelers kinda story, where the main character speaks the story off screen, like he's telling it to someone, while you watch him on screen doing his thing of what he's talking about.

I guess you need one hell of a writer and also a director to make this movie be as good as the game.
Especially a game with a deep story where the player kinda has to imagin himself what has happened in the past, and what would happen afterwards.
Hmm..
Maybe they make a movie of what happened before the events of the game?
That would kinda ruin the mystery of it, I think.

Or maybe it's the story of how Dormin got sealed, how it all happened when he/she wanted to take control?

Wow, I'm already surprised they wanna make a movie out of this on such a short time since it's release.
I wonder if I'll be surprised if it turns out to be a good one.

Has there ever (ever) been a movie made from a video game that was even remotely worth watching? Doom was horrendous, Tomb Raider is terrible, and Super Mario Bros...well that's resented even by the people that made it.
Case and point.
This film will ruin the perfection of the game, and taint it with disgusting crapness.

I thought Mortal Kombat (the first one) was remotely worth watching.

I honestly see this falling harder than any colossus fell in the game.

Silent Hill, Mortal Kombat, and the RE movies were among the "not-as-shitty-as-they-could-have-been" video game movies. I personally liked Silent Hill the most because it retainbed a lot from the games like the music, the atmosphere, the enemies...;stuff like that actually makes fans appreciate the movie a bit more.

Now with a SotC movie, how are they gonna turn a lifeless land with 16 behemoths to kill into a 90 minute film? Follow Wander all around with nothing to say? No, pretty much whatever they do is gonna ruin the integrity of the game and trash the atmospher that Ueda created. For this to be even remotely successful you're gonna need Ueda's assistance on the artistic atmosphere and Ko Otani's score to accompany that. Seriously people, the second most important thing in this game was the music. If they hire anyone else to do it, I'd laugh.

I think Ico would have made a much better movie, tbh. Atleast you have someone with you to communicate with and it was also the first game, and since they are set in the same world, its like making a movie of Halo 2 before Halo 1.

I don't think I wanna see this movie just because I fear what it could become and most likely will be. Sure it's not Uwe Boll directing, but its off to a bad start already.

I think their best hope would be to turn it into an avant garde type film, without trying to turn it into any big-plot hollywood style thing. But you're right, they'd have to do something with it, and anything they do will ruin the translation from game to movie.

What translation? The game had a mostly "use your imagination to fill in the blanks" plot. There are so many unanswered questions. You know generally what is going on but that's all.

I really am confused as to what they intend to do in the film version. It really is a completely different medium and a different experience. I suppose they are going for some kind of special effects extravaganza.

I just mean that, in translation from game to movie, anything they do to adapt it to the movie format will ruin the movie in itself.

and if it's going to be anything but an avant garde film you can't have it be "open to translation" in that much capacity or it'll most likely tank at the box office. for the most part folks want to be spoon fed their plotline and trying to remain as faithful as possible to what we see in the game just wouldn't pan out successfully on the big screen. there would be a lot of creative liberties that would need to be taken in order to make this something marketable.

i am however very curious to see how this project develops, though. it's just that that curiosity comes with an equal amount of apprehension.

If its not a faithful translation then theres no point in using the sotc name. seriously how hard can it be to dream up a premise for a man to fight monsters.
