I always named them after people in my life at the time. That got dull later on when I played other RPGs. Now I name them after elements, states of mind, and in general dark names. I also make random words up- which is what I did in earthbound. At least I've never stooped to naming all my characters AAAA.

and that little rat thing Moo moo
i only liked the main guy and the girl. the other dudes were annoying

At least that's what my friends named them.
