Subject: Grandia 2 PC Problems - READ HERE FIRST
-------------------------------------------
Hi guys.
Wow, there seem to be a lot of bugs with grandia 2 PC version. I can't even boot the game =/
When I try to open the game, I get an error and the game shuts down. Here are the details I get:
AppName: grandia2.exe AppVer: 0.0.0.0 ModName: ~df394b.tmp
ModVer: 0.0.0.0 Offset: 000586b8
Anyone got this error before or know how to fix it? =[

Never mind. Please disregard that last post.
I finally got it to work =D I guess now all I have to do is deal with in game bugs. The intro vid went by no problem and I didn't have to mess with any codecs, and I saved / loaded perfectly.
Btw I searched a bit and there seems to be a patch package out there (3 patches?) somewhere. Does anyone have this package?

XG: I think somebody posted it in the first post on page 9.
As for my Millenia bug, I ended up doing a new game and NOT talking to the tutorial guy this time. I also set the AI to Meanie and she ended up casting zap within 30 seconds of the battle with her. It went really smoothly.
So... I guess I'll leave all of these posts as a little archive of my problems and how I fixed them. Hopefully if anybody else comes by these problems, it will help them out too.
I'll probably be posting back with another bug so you guys can help me (if I come to another one later in the game)
I hope you guys don't mind! I don't want to be a pest here!

Well. No, I have that crack. I found that through searching on google and that's actually how I got it to work.
I was referring to an (unofficial?) XP patch that people kept mentioning over and over in various places but to which no actual link exists.
the 3 patch package can be found on HongFire, but there aren't any seeders so it's a waste of time =/
Btw does talking to the tutorial guy actually change anything? I'm thinking of just setting the AI to Meanie and seeing if that works out.

Yup... And confirmed, for anyone who cares.
You don't need to set the AI to meanie, just make sure you don't talk to the tutorial guy.
Millenia cast zap on the third action.

Heya,
here's my problem:
- First problem: the game freezes during the first video after the first loading screen. I can hear the music but the screen is black. My computer doesn't respond anymore and I have to reboot.
Played the game on a friend's pc with no problems at all. At the first save opportunity I saved the game and I imported the savefile to my own pc. From that point on I could play the game without any problems.
UNTILL....
When I arrived at the grana cliffs, the video freezes, right after Roan wants to show the cliffs to the others. The movie starts and I see the first frame of it (the cliff seen from above). But the video doesn't start. The audio is just fine but the video freezes up completly and my pc becomes unresponsive again. Once the soundtrack is finished, it just restarts.
The particular movie is mcg02.avi
First I thought this was a codec-issue as I learned the game uses the an indeo codec to play back the gamevideos.
But I can play back the in-game videos perfectly fine on any of my players. So I'm pretty certain i've got the right codecs installed.
Could there be another reason? I note that some video files are named differently than the others. For example:
- the first video has some capital letters: mCG01.avi
- the video that freezes has none: mcg02.avi
Obviously I tried renaming the file without any result.
I also tried to get passed this point by removing the problemvideo from the folder. no result.
Things I've done so far:
1. I run the game in win98 compatibility mode
2. discarded my gamepad and continued with the keyboard
3. checked codecs
4. copied all video files from the cd to the corresponding folders on my harddrive
Yet, the problem remains. Are there any other options? I've read some posts of this thread and spotted some similar problems, but none of the solutions seem to work for me.
Oop. Sorry I missed that post.
I didn't have to mess with my codecs at all, and the videos from the game play just fine.
I have Combined Codec Community Pack installed and that's it. I didn't need to change anything. Try installing that and see if it works.
Don't know if it's relevant, but I also have the latest versions of DirectX, and one more thing is that I'm not using compatibility mode at all.

Okay, guys. Everything's been working fine. I've just got a question now.
The game has had GORGEOUS 3D models and cutscenes, but the CG cutscenes that are supposed to be extremely high-quality (not the cutscenes made from the models) are REALLY crappy looking. They're all pixelly and I can hardly make out any detail. You'd expect the CG cutscenes would be much more high definition than the normal 3D cutscenes, but for some reason they're just grossly ugly. Does anybody know why?

There's nothing wrong. It's just made like that.
Crappy quality no matter what you do. Disappointing, but considering the age of this game...

Hey I've had that codecpack installed for ages already. So . Besides cccp, I've only got xvid and h/x264 installed for encoding purposes and those don't influence any other codecs. I'm pretty sure it's no codec related.
I've also got the latest directx vesion installed and I've tried both with and without the compatibility mode. Maybe I'm overlooking something simple? I've tried every resolution though, no luck so far. I just see the first frame of the clip and hear the music. It's as if the game can't locate the video files. Hence, the idea of renaming the video files (some had capital letters, others didn't). No result with the renaming either. So far I've been able to bridge the problem by using my friend's savefiles but this way is ofc not very enjoyable. I've also loaded the config every time before I run the game. Doesn't solve anything.
Thanks for your quick reply but none of these solutions seem to help. I've been thinking of rerendering the videoclips to a normal resolution (that's why the playback looks messy...the resolutions are meant for dreamcast and the devs didn't rerender them). Ofc, this is alot of work and it may not even solve the problem..so I'm gonna try some more suggestions first.

Ah... mm.
As for renaming, you don't need to, my visual files are like that too.
I don't think this is the problem (because the game would error + shutdown if it were, but...)
If you're using a no-cd crack, make sure you extracted all the files from CD2 correctly. (i.e. no layered folders such as C:\Program Files\Grandia II\Visuals\Visuals)
But if you've been going to your friend's house to bypass the problem, you're probably using a cd...
If you're able to see at least the first frame of the video, I don't think it's a problem with locating it, it just can't play it. Which leads us back to codecs.

Ok, here is how I could manage to fix all Video problems.
I messed around with different Codec Versions and different Packs (just like K-Lite Codec Pack), but it wasn't going to work (neither the intros were playing nor the in-game Battle Movies did not freeze).
Then I remembered that I used the
SLD Codec Pack last time I played Grandia 2.
One short restart later I was (and still am) able to play without any freezing.

to fix this, (cuz i had the same problem) i first needed to add the 20-25second of mute sound like someone said be4 to all the videos, and afterwards i simply copied mcg01 twice and renamed them to mcg02 and 02a, that way the game didn't bug and i could skip the videos.
hope it helps

Hello guys.
I have Grandia II PC version and I have a problem with it:
In Power Up menu I can't change for magic and skills so I can upgrade only special moves. It's really irritating. Can anyone help me?
