This feature is for the convenience of users who don't want to have to manually log into the site with every visit. Enabling this checkbox will set a cookie on your system with special auto-login code that will authorize your username everytime you visit the site, without having to come to this screen! Be warned, however, that this is not recommended if you share the computer with multiple users (as they can access your preferences and post forum/private messages with your account).
