Biography:
My life is meaningless. Your life is meaningless. In fact, everyone's life is meaningless. But this is not depressing. On the contrary, this is an excuse to be joyous. If we acknowledge our meaningless existence, we can live life to the fullest. If we do not fear eternal damnation, we can take joy from everything we do. We all know we will die; it is only a matter of time. Rather than think of this as a death sentence, focus on the present. Focus on what we have here and now, and make the most of it. We only have one shot; why should we waste it?

Camus and Sartre are the greatest teachers of our time. Read their works and you will understand.

Call me Potsy ;)

I'm going to write something in here for the sake of it.

As for the first part of this Biography, that's just a reference to my beliefs on life. If you haven't guessed I'm existential, and that paragraph pretty much sums up how I see the world. In general this means that not much will affect me heavily or get me down because I don't see the point in letting that happen. Why should I let other people make my life sad? It also helps that I've managed to develop an ability to just ignore anything that's not worth pursuing (usually).

As you may or may not have guessed I enjoy Japan and a lot of things about it. While I have never been there (I've never even left Australia) I have studied the language for 6.5 years and also have a great interest in a lot of the culture and activities that come out of the country. I enjoy origami; I have made many, many things but I am by no means an expert at the art. I also enjoy taking the lyrics to Japanese songs and trying to translate them, with varying success. My current guesstimate for my ability in terms of speaking the language is that I know enough to survive for a while, but when it comes to having a decent conversation I wouldn't last more than 10-15 minutes without resorting to some English.

I'm currently studying Biomedicine at the University of Melbourne. I'm also discovering that Uni sucks when you're 17 and are busy most nights. The course itself is interesting, although first year is far too general and as such is rather boring. For example, ten weeks into the course and we have learnt about six elements in chemistry! Studying Japanese alongside this makes for an interesting change; unfortunately I managed to fluke a good score in my Year 12 and was put into the advanced class this year. I've managed to survive so far, but I don't know how well I'll do when almost every other person is Japanese or has spent at least a year there.

The course itself is a three year undergraduate degree which can lead into several areas. I like to think of Biomedicine as a combination of Medicine and Science in that after the three years I can head off into all areas of medicinal study or I can go off and do research etc.., much like in a Science degree. My main reason for choosing it would be that I knew I wanted to head in this direction, but had no idea exactly where; this gives me a three year base knowledge with which I hope to make a much more informed decision. Also it means that after the three years I can take a year off and do what I have wanted to do for a long time now; spend a year studying/working in Japan.

I am currently in the rather awkward position of being over-employed without actually being employed anywhere. I have four casual jobs, most of which are administration stuff (filing, databasing etc...), but being casual work I am not an official employee for any of them. I also coach two field hockey teams, although I only get paid for one of those; the other one simply means I get 50% of my fees for the club. On top of this I usually umpire several games of hockey a week. Pay is good; $16 for the casual stuff, $25 for umpiring and $30 for coaching (all hourly rates). As you may have guessed, hockey is a very important part of my life.

I have played hockey myself for eleven years (this season being my 11th). In the ten completed seasons I made finals six times, made the grand final twice and have won one premiership (the losing grand final was 3-2 in extra time). The grand final win was last year, a 1-0 win over Camberwell. I am playing with the same team again this year and currently after five rounds we are on top of the ladder with five straight wins. Most notably we have beaten the second placed side MCC 2-1 in round two (without several key players), MCC having won their other four games by an average margin of six goals. I'm one of those people who can play absolutely anywhere (except goalkeeper); I'll usually start in the midfield before dropping back into defence and then shuffling between there and the attack for the rest of the game. Pretty much I'm the fittest guy on the team so they just put me wherever they need someone to run. In terms of coaching, the teams I coach are my club's Under 13 A side, which is currently undefeated with three wins and two draws, (although I am not the sole coach of the team) and my old school's Year 8 A side, which sits at two wins and two losses (one of the wins was a 4-3 victory with a goal with less than 30 seconds on the clock). I am an A badged junior umpire, which just means I can umpire any level of junior hockey and get paid for it.

I'm one of those people who tends not to win a lot; I usually end up placing second or third in any competition for anything that I'm skillful at. Testament to this is that three of the few things I've ever come first in were shared with another person; best and fairest in my hockey team several years ago, winner of my school's annual speaking competition in Year 10 and Dux of the school last year (the latter being the biggest and most pleasant surprise of my life). I participate in just about everything; in my last year at school I played cricket and hockey, performed on stage in a musical, sang in the choir, captained a debating team and helped Year 7s with their homework...

I love sport in general. I'm not an awesome sportsman; I'm a pretty good hockey player, I make a decent left back/keeper for soccer and I can bowl offspin alright in cricket but that's about it. Although I may not be good at a particular sport, I enjoy playing and watching it nonetheless. During the summer I'll sit down for long periods of time watching the cricket; during winter I'll be watching the AFL, especially if my team the West Coast Eagles are playing. My greatest memory is still being present at the AFL Grand Final in 2006 to see West Coast beat Sydney by a point in one of the greatest contests of the modern era. I even wrote a speech about this in Japanese =D.

I tend to be a very logical person, which probably explains why I do well in maths and science based subjects. Apparently I have a good memory (at least that's what my teachers used to say) but I've never really noticed. One thing against that is that I'm terrible with names, yet I can recall almost any scientific/mathematical term or equation that I have learned. In school I never tended to be excellent at subjects such as English; in fact until Year 12 I never got above a B+ for the subject. Some people said it was because I had skipped a year of schooling and didn't have the mental maturity to understand the concepts of the novel; personally I don't know what it was, but when English was my highest raw score in VCE I was very surprised.

I enjoy debating, not just in the sense of the competitive sport but as a whole. Having two younger brothers often causes a lot of arguments, and I just love using nothing but logic to break down and destroy anything they say. When I did debate during high school it was as a third speaker; I loved the freedom you had to simply stand up and speak about whatever had been said without being restricted to what you'd written down on the cards. I'm not usually aggressive when I argue; I merely analyse the situation and note both the pros and cons, before stating any logical reasoning behind why I support a particular option. I find that by actively looking at the opposing view than you really can find flaws in your own and are able to work actively to improve on them. It also looks a lot better if you are reasonable and balanced rather than stubborn and biased.

In terms of neo, there's really only four forums I visit nowadays; Pokemon Diamond, Oceania, Intellectual Exchanges and Loungin'. As a whole I think the site is a great place, if a little distracting. I have met many people here who I have developed friendships with and the ability to talk to people from all over the world and to hear their opinions on all manner of topics is fantastic. The community itself is so close and the popularity and diversity of the site is second to none.

Anyway, that's about all I've got for now. Wrote a lot more than I had intended too, so I guess that's a positive. Probably numerous typos in there but I'm too lazy to read back through it and there's no spell check option on the profile update thing...
