| Biography: |
Politically, I am an enlightened absolute monarchist, ordoliberal, fiscal conservative, and Gaullist.
Religiously, I am an atheist, a pantheist, a naturalistic LaVeyan, aesthetic realist, and a secular humanist.
--
A theist stands on a street corner bellowing "GOD IS STANDING ROUND THE CORNER! I HAVE NO NEED TO LOOK! I HAVE FAITH AND HE IS THERE! JUST BELIEVE AND HE SHALL BE THERE FOR YOU!".
A passing atheist hears this, looks round the corner and seeing there is no god shouts "HEY! EVERYONE! DON'T BELIEVE THIS GUY! GOD IS NOT AROUND THE CORNER!!". Since, from what they know of the world, god being round the corner would be extremely unlikely, those who hear the atheist turn to the theist and say "HEY THEIST! GOD IS NOT AROUND THE CORNER!".
"WHAT PROOF DO YOU HAVE?", the theist replies, "HAVE YOU SEEN GOD IS NOT AROUND THE CORNER? NO! YOUR BELIEF IS BASED ON FAITH AND THE WORD OF OTHERS AND IS JUST AS MUCH A SUBJECTIVE POINT OF VIEW AS MINE! GOD IS ROUND THE CORNER! JUST BELIEVE, FEEL IT IN YOUR HEART AND HE SHALL BE THERE FOR YOU!".
Many of the people don't have time for this and concede that maybe the he has a point, that perhaps god is round the corner (and perhaps not) and continue on their way.
Some of low intelligence and/or high gullibility are so impressed with the theist's zeal that they decide that what he says must be true, that god is indeed around the corner, that the claim needs no verification and that the world needs to know. They resolve to spread this 'good news' as soon as they can to everyone they meet.
And then there are the others. The loose coalition of those who take issue with the theist's words, the naturally curious and true believers, anxious to glimpse god whilst he stands around the corner. Nervously they gather as one and take a peek. Some are pleased by what they see, others angered, but, whatever their individual emotional reactions, they turn to the theist and yell "Hey! God is not around the corner, IDIOT, come here and TAKE A LOOK!".
Silence.
The air is thick with tension. The crowd waits for the theist's inevitable response: promises of repentance; an apology, the embarrassment and sorrow; the humbling admission of foolishness and guilt for spreading such a blatant untruth. None of it happens, of course. After just a few seconds, the theist laughs, relaxes, stops shifting nervously on his feet, his eyes glaze over and a manic grin spreads across his face as he throws back his head and bellows: "GOD IS STANDING ROUND THE CORNER! I HAVE NO NEED TO LOOK! I HAVE FAITH AND HE IS THERE! JUST BELIEVE AND HE SHALL BE THERE FOR YOU!". |
