Double dual cores, single quad core

AMD has been keeping their fabs busy. According to Hong Kong based HKEPC, three new Phenom II parts are going to be touching down in April.

The first of the three new chips will be the Phenom II X4 955 processor with a clock frequency of 3.2GHz. Certainly, 3.2GHz is nothing to scoff at -- with the release of this new Phenom II X4, the Intel/AMD quad core price-war is going to be elevated yet another little step. The socket AM3 Phenom II X4 955 will have 8MB cache, and will support DDR3-1333.

The next parts are dual-core Phenom IIs. These are interesting chips: they are most probably Phenom IIs that have 2 cores disabled. So while they are 'only' dual cores, they will benefit from having a good 6MB shared L3 cache, and 512KB of L2 cache for each core. These chips are going to be the Phenom II X2 545, at 3.0 GHz, and the Phenom II X2 550, at 3.1GHz.

You can expect that these two new dual-core Phenom IIs will be very reasonably priced, as Intel has a slew of high-performing, budget dual-core Core 2 Duo parts on the market.

Maybe, with a great deal of luck, some of the cores on these dual-core X2 parts might be able to be unlocked with the right motherboard, like some of the recent X3 chips.
