Capcom exec calls DLC-whining "BS"

Getting testy after all the Resident Evil 5 DLC complaints

So people were pretty upset when Capcom announced post-launch DLC.  Seems gamers thought this "Versus" mode should've been included on the same disc and felt cheated Capcom would pull this sort of stunt.  Then again, the company has been using DLC to push their games since Street Fighter IV, but costume packs warranted less gamer-rage.

Fans have taken their complaints to the official Capcom forums, and one whiner in particular really got to Christian Svensson, Officer/VP of Strategic Planning & Business Development -- known as "Sven" on the forums.

The original poster had this to say about RE5's "Versus" DLC:

The first point, I purchased Resident Evil 5 yesterday and the first thing that happened when I put the DVD into my 360 was that I was told an update was available and that I had to download it. An update on the day of release? What was in the update that I had to download on the release day?

My second point. Just read that Capcom are releasing extra content for Resident Evil 5 to download at a price. This extra content consists of sevaral online game modes, the basic type of modes that come packaged with every other game for free. Playstation gamers are going to be charged $5  and 360 gamers 400 Microsoft Points. It's a sham. I have already seen screenshots of these game modes in action so they are obviously complete. Why were they not shipped with the full game Capcom?

Not one to leave challenges unanswered, Sven decided to post a counter attack.  It's certainly more forthcoming than Capcom's original statement defending their odd timing with this paid DLC:

I'm sorry guys, but this is the part where I have to call "BS".  RE5 is well worth every penny of $60. A huge game, with tons of replay value, loads of unlockables, new weapons, co-op, mercenaries mode, etc. If any game warrants its price point, it's RE5.

Prior to the announcement of the Versus mode, no one complained they weren't getting their money's worth with the initial release because it packs TONS of value because it is an amazing game. So if people were already satisfied with what the package had, when we offer MORE, why is it people feel they've been somehow cheated? If you don't find value in our secondary offerings, the choice is simple, don't purchase it. If you do find it valuable (and we hope you do) please do buy it and enjoy it.

Secondly, whenever we do PDLC, that content exists with its own budgets, it's own profit and loss analysis with its own forecasts. If it didn't, that extra content wouldn't have been put into production, because it did not fit within the production budget of the base product.

The content that is shipping in the full game exists within its own budget. The content shipping afterward (regardless of how close to release it is... because the goal IS to have it release relatively closely to the base product's release) exists within its own budget. To try and have it release in a timeframe that is relatively close to the initial release, development starts well before the base product is on the shelves. There's no other way to keep it within 3 to 6 weeks of the initial release (which is the goal).

And again, for those people looking at this anew, the DLC in question is not an unlock on the disc.

Lesson of the day?  Don't mess with Capcom, or they'll sic Sven on you!

Thank goodness he cleared that up, I almost felt obligated to purchase it. I'll avoid it though for sure now

I call bullshit on his bullshit call. Basically what he's admitting to is that they never intended to include the online mode and to charge people extra for it from the get go.

Don't get me wrong, I have no stake in this as I'm not interested in RE5 in the least. This is also a business, and sometimes it is necessary for a business to force their customers to purchase MORE.....so I get the idea and appreciate the brilliant strategy of it all.

However, there are better ways to go about it to not screw the customer so blatantly.....like I dunno, waiting 3-4 weeks to release it. It makes people feel like the company is supporting the game, and not ripping them off. It's all about how you go about forcing that customer to pay for the extras that determines their perception.

Use vaseline and people don't feel like they're getting raped so badly.....LMFAO

What is making me angry is that people will actually buy this thing, feeding capcom and giving them every reason to implement this type of money grabbing scheme for all their upcoming games. I would love it if sales were low, but they'll be pretty good Im sure, much to my disgust.

If it is a scam, I'd rather they release it earlier than later -- later looks like they're trying to cover it up.

This is BS. He can spin it any way he wants, but they've pissed me off already by making RE5 a "action" game (instead of "survival-horror") and then wanting more money for online features. BS, completely. I've been an RE fan from the start, but they've lost my business. I agree with VeGitAX2. I don't want what they're offering, I don't like the stunt they tried to pull, and I'm not buying it.

What a load of crap - not Sven, you lot! If you compare this to Anal Rape then wtf are Microsoft doing to the Halo franchise??
If it doesn't involve a Sperm Whale and half a tonne of Lube the comparison is shot!

RE5 DOES contain a lot as a game, it doesn't really need a versus feature, and to be honest I prefered that they hadn't bothered shoving one on! Look at the GTAIV fiasco!
