Still another 3 weeks until official release
You've probably heard by now that the upcoming Marvel film, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, was leaked to P2P sites near the end of March.
Apparently you are not the only person who has heard that by now, as according to TorrentFreak, the movie has been downloaded more than a million times, and is currently the most popular movie downloaded on the largest torrent tracking sites.
20th Century Fox is extra-upset with the movie being leaked because it is a workprint, with numerous special effects and post-production work absent. The worst case scenario is that the illegally downloaded, unfinished product generates bad word-of-mouth (especially with the core demographic that the movie is aimed), tanking the profit margin for this fourth X-Men film, which was pegged by many to be a sure-blockbuster.
The FBI is hard at work trying to locate the leaker.
It's pretty easy to say that whoever leaked it is screwed and chances are the studio handling it is going to get dinged by Fox anyway. Most workprint leaks result in some epic punishments by the Feds.
Either way that guy isn't having a good time. I do wonder how the sales will be for the movie come the opening weekend, the problem with making a movie for a core audience is that core audience often does anything they can to find out as much of the movie as they can before it hits the big screen. I'm sure it'll sell well but I just wonder how far it'll go. A friend of mine said a bootlegger by campus was selling the movie already on the street so it's already cycled down the channels.
In relation to the story, I don't think the workprint will kill the movie. I'm gonna go see it anyway. Seems like a good movie.
